Spectacular David! Safe journey!

The ravens look nice all put together and painted.

I'm liking the Dark elf cavalry a whole lot, too.

+1

Those Dark Elf cavalry are hard to pass up. He said they were going to look good but these are better than I thought.

I don't need any more new projects. Really, I don't. But I'm going to buy them anyway aren't I?

nycjadie02 Mar 2010 2:15 p.m. PST

The raven model is very dramatic. Well done!

Those Ravens would work for a certain Wargods ability – I'll have to pick up a set as its cheaper than trying to find the OOP GW small "carrion" figures.

The Dark Elves rock!
I needed some allies for the Dark Dwarves :)

Cacique Caribe02 Mar 2010 2:36 p.m. PST

Wow!!! Those dark elves would make awesome medieval vampires, like the ones in the flashbacks in Underworld.

cool looking stuff!

autos da fe02 Mar 2010 3:06 p.m. PST

beautiful. but why a swarm? there are such intriguing words one hardly ever gets to use.

a murder of crows; an unkindness of ravens.

Andrew May102 Mar 2010 3:32 p.m. PST

I agree with autos da fe, they should definately be called an unkindness of ravens! Great mini!

doc mcb02 Mar 2010 3:49 p.m. PST

Rod gets the credit for the inspired design for the bat swarm and now the ravens -- center pole and wheel spokes to glue the critters to.

Btw, Rod, I'm still looking for the Rafm Conquesta-dwarves -- meantime, if you come across some, get 'em and I'll reimburse you.

Question to all: what other flying swarms (murders, unpleasantnesses) would folks like to have available? Now that we have the basic system worked out, it's pretty easy to add a new type.

Pixies? pixie dragons? giant locusts? giant wasps? owls?

I have the giant bat swarm, which, being giant bats, work well with my 10mm forces— so if you're a 10mm fan, you might consider using the new ravens as giant ravens.

As for the question, Doc McB, I have to admit that a swarm of pixie dragons is intriguing, though I honestly have no use for them.

Your own interpretation of D&D stirges might be of interest to DMs out there.

A swarm of flaming, winged imps might also find a place.

JRacel02 Mar 2010 4:02 p.m. PST

Doc,

What about any of the following (adding a little SciFi) . . .

- Flying lizards (small pterodactyls or similar) to use with lizardmen forces or other dinosaur based settings

- Small flying robot swarm for SciFi forces

- Flying aliens of some sort

The Pixies, pixie dragons and bugs sound good, but not too sure about a flock of Owls since they are fairly solitary critters.

mweaver02 Mar 2010 4:14 p.m. PST

Something that could double for 28mm stirges would be useful.

We are going to have to raid your booth at Historicon this year, it seems.

ming3102 Mar 2010 4:46 p.m. PST

I have the bat swarn and is perfect as a 25/28mm bat swarn . I see ravens in the future

Steve Hazuka02 Mar 2010 6:46 p.m. PST

Those Ravens would make a great animal pack for a Special Unit in Age of Might and Steel.

A swarm of rabbits!
(you know I would ask that)
A.

doc mcb02 Mar 2010 7:04 p.m. PST

Actually, a swarm of rabbits would be very good. Still lots of Monty Python fans out there.

Sumo Boy02 Mar 2010 7:54 p.m. PST

The crows will be great for a Wicked Witch of the West army for HotT. Someone needs to make 15mm flying monkies.

doc mcb02 Mar 2010 8:38 p.m. PST

Oh yes, that's a great idea.

mweaver02 Mar 2010 9:42 p.m. PST

Harder for me to use in our D&D games, but flying monkeys are inherently cool, no kidding.

Boromirandkermit03 Mar 2010 12:11 a.m. PST

Pixie Dragons (Dragonettes) or flying lizards would be excellent.

Great releases mate – looking forward to more of the splintered lands as well – any time frame?

Cheers,
Ben.

doc mcb03 Mar 2010 5:39 a.m. PST

I've seen the concept sketches for prairie dogs and raccoons and armadillos and possums and some others. No idea how far along they are, though.

autos da fe03 Mar 2010 11:25 a.m. PST

How about a lamentation of swans, for the forces of light.

doc mcb03 Mar 2010 12:27 p.m. PST

SWANS:

The following is inspired by a large plastic swan and a set of clear plastic swan "boats" (intended to hold candy or such at a party) from the wedding department of Hobby Lobby:

The flying races of the Splintered Light include not only carnivores such as the giant eagles and griffins, but also the great trumpeter swans. These intelligent and peaceable creatures have wingspans up to 100 feet and are considered to be perhaps the most beautiful of all living things. They are also among the rarest of sights, as they prefer to live and nest in inaccessible places. Though fierce in defense of mate or nest and too large to fear most enemies, swans' nests and young are vulnerable to numerous smaller predators, and the eagles and griffins are their matches in size and so potentially dangerous. Accordingly, swan couples choose to live upon the banks of large lakes, preferably well away from competitors. And when danger does threaten, the swans will generally try to move to another spot.

In order to move their eggs and nest and cygnets, swans possess a unique spiritual ability: they can carry objects (up to several hundred pounds, or about the size and weight of several eggs or one of their cygnets) through a mental or spiritual projection. An adult swan can manage up to four such projections simultaneously, so a swan couple can move its nest and contents in one joint effort.

No one knows precisely the nature of this ability. Sylphs can carry objects, and perhaps an adult swan can summon and control simultaneously up to four sylphs. The Druid has suggested that the power involved is actually Love! In any case, the power certainly exists.

Mountain Home contains several high lakes with adequate feeding for a swan couple, though the lower and warmer lakes of the Druid's forest have much larger food supplies. Both the Wyldwood and Mountain Home give legal protection to swans, which at least prevents the organized hunting parties that keep swans out of Moonglade. Rangers regard the protection of swans' nests as part of their duty. The dwarven king has even stationed small garrisons at swam nesting grounds to protect them. Some swan couples divide their year between the druid's and the dwarven king's domains. A swan couple may carry their family hundreds of miles in such annual relocations.

While swans are not warlike and prefer to remain aloof from the other races, they do understand their indebtedness to the Druid and Dwarven King, and will put their carrying ability at the disposal of these rulers. This is a RARE event, however; there are not very many swans, and their familial duties preclude long periods away from their nests. But at great need, an army might have the services of a single swan, or a dwarven balloonboat might be accompanied by one.

GAME EFFECTS:

A swan can carry up to four loads at once, under the following restrictions:

1) The load must include a living thing. It cannot be just inanimate cargo.
2) The entire load must be moved from one place to another place. (This means no bombing is possible.)
3) A load's size and weight must be under 500 pounds. A full-sized horse is too large.
4) A swanload defends itself as a D4 spirit. It cannot be targeted by, e.g., normal missile fire. If defeated in spirit combat, the load falls.

Tactical uses:

Mountain Home has designed small bolt throwers with a crew of four (usually halflings); these break down into four loads, and a crewman plus artillery

doc mcb03 Mar 2010 12:28 p.m. PST

I'm not sure how I'd use a "swarm" of smaller swans, though. Any ideas?

Personal logo Parzival Supporting Member of TMP03 Mar 2010 8:53 p.m. PST

As a bugle corps? grin

Steve Hazuka03 Mar 2010 9:39 p.m. PST

Doc Mcb is that an African or a European Swan? Can they do that with a coconut too.

doc mcb04 Mar 2010 5:37 a.m. PST

Parzival, yes, a morale-lifting flying unit. HOOONNNNKKK!

TTW, I'll have to look up the difference, I confess.

doc mcb04 Mar 2010 11:33 a.m. PST

TTW, my son reminds me that I'm forgetting another reference to the HG. I'll swallow my shame and humiliation.

Steve Hazuka05 Mar 2010 8:08 p.m. PST

Gotcha!
