I let Paul Ashton at Amazon Miniatures know that some of us would be very interested in an Entelodont mini. Send Amazon an e-mail; maybe we'll get one.

Yeah, I want some in 28mm.

BlackWidowPilot Fezian23 Apr 2006 6:02 p.m. PST

Actually, I should send Amazon the link to Oulduvai George's weblog, which has a superb rendering of an Entelodont -and a *small one* BTW!!- on the site's header for the home page!

<<Imagine a goblin riding one of those…>>

LOL!! A *goblin* would be little more than a *snack* to a full-grown Entelodont! Remember, the one rendered on Olduvai George's website is an *adolescent*, as an adult would stand 7 feet at the shoulder! More like a fully armoured *Uruk hai* would be riding one of those brutes (and no doubt loving every minute of it until the Entelodont decides to snatch an arm or leg off the rider when he gets a bit peckish…>;D

<<Leland, now you've got my interest in the critter.>>

Picture this: a fully armoured greater orc/Uruk Hai armoured like a cataphract, as much to protect him from his mount as it is from enemy action. A long spear pole lashed to the back of the Entelodon'ts neck, projecting out well past his snout. Dangling from the end of the spear pole is a live hobbit tied to a thin rope, to serve as "motivation" to keep the Entelodont pointed and moving more or less in the right direction.

There. You get the idea…>;D

There is an old post at Olduvai George that has more Entelodonts.

Also, there is a book called (I think) "The White River Badlands" which has some pictures and descriptions of Entelodonts. Check the library. It was published by the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology

Cacique Caribe28 Aug 2006 8:40 a.m. PST

Leland,

Don't give up yet. I am still planning on getting a suitable boar to convert and send your way. Once the conversion is made with greenstuff, I will make a latex mould of the areas added. This will also be sent your way, so you can make quick replicas of the head and shoulder structure.

I do have one question: If the humans are 28mm, how tall should the boars be to be suitable entelodont candidates for conversion?

CC

Cacique Caribe28 Aug 2006 8:48 a.m. PST

Are these the proportions you want?

picture

The entelodont is 16.6% taller than the human, and the human is 28mm to the top of his head, then the entelodont would be about 33mm at the shoulder.

Do you know any boars that are that height at the shoulder? What manufacturer/link? I just have to try this out man.

Of course, if the humans are taller (to the top of their head) then the entelodont will have to be taller at the top of the shoulders.

CC

Cacique Caribe28 Aug 2006 8:50 a.m. PST

Leland,

Which human figures are you using? How tall are they?

CC

BlackWidowPilot Fezian28 Aug 2006 6:39 p.m. PST

<<Which human figures are you using? How tall are they?>>

I use a mix of old Metal Magic, current Obelisk Miniatures, Copplestone (Foundry) and Copplestone (Castings), Old Glory, Crusader Miniatures, and so on. Pretty solid 28mm figures, so my Hawgs from Hell must be proportionally compatable. >;D

OK. I don't know what happened to the boar in the link above. I think it would have been absolutely perfect for the body.

Anyway, Leland . . . find the right body and I will do what I can with the head.

I will. May I suggest a brass wire armature for a starter, then build up the lil' piggie's carcass *solidly* around it so it'll withstand the vulcanizing process? Also, do you want me to do teh research on the hawg? Do you have a copy of WALKING WITH PREHISTORIC BEASTS to call yer own (I'll send you one if need be!)?

As a matter of fact, I don't have it yet.

Also, you are looking for an Entelodont for use with 28mm figures, right?

I just want to make sure I scale things properly when I start on it (no earlier than the end of next week, though).

No rush at all. I am just happy that someone who can actually sculpt is tackling this challenge and shares my enthusiasm for things Prehistoric-with-an-ATTITUDE! evil grin

I would strongly recommend that you refer to Olduvai George's rendering for the body proportions, as he seems to have an excellent grasp of how these critters should look (just keep in mind that the Entelodont on his website would be a *juvenile* rather than an adult!)…

Leland,

Here are the numbers I've come up with when scaling those puppies for gaming with figures sized 28mm-30mm:

Total length: 48.75mm (Length of head 10mm, Length of neck 13.75, Lenght of body 25mm)
Total height: 32.5mm (if using a 30mm human figure as a comparison basis)

Does that sound about right to you?

Ya know, CC, I have always thought that the very idea of some mad scientist type trying to back engineer a bigger, meatier hawg for the holiday ham market, only to have that lil' money makin' scheme go terribly awry, would make a most entertaining pulp fiction scenario…. evil grin

Personally…. I don't think that apart from yourself… There has been a very big clamouring for Entelodonts…

There does seem to have been quite a clammouring for Andrewsarchus Mongoliensis that was recently filled though…
