You noticed how I avoided saying "holes" (just in case).

I think these are GREAT (enough variety to reconstruct the entire Shire)!

Does anyone else make Hobbit dwellings?

I bet they would look wonderful with these:

I might buy these for my wife. It might get her to change her mind about gaming!!!

Those Fantascene Hobbit Holes are beautiful. I have the one from the Miniature Building Authority:

It's beautiful inside and out. Looks great with my Hobbits from Grenadier, Citadel, Copplestone, and Mithril. And it's on sale now, too.

Cacique Caribe24 Jan 2006 5:05 p.m. PST

Wow. And with a removable roof too! Fantastic.

This looks interesting too:

Until the point when the orcs attack.

There's a MBA hobbit home at the War Room here in Georgia (MBA is made down the street and the owner is associated with MBA). Its dubbed CSI Hobbiton. There's a chalk line on the floor inside….

Good stuff.

Bill: "Until the point when the orcs attack."

I don't know. She can be a lioness when defending her own.

Let me take you down to memory lane…

(scroll down to pic of hobbit house)

I had 3 different types in production (resin, 25mm)… about 25 years ago! (for M'figs Mythical Earth and der Kriegspielers'…)

Have you seen that new Hasslefree resin trench piece?

CooperSteveatWork25 Jan 2006 2:30 a.m. PST

SNAPDRAGON do some nice underground dwellings that are quite hobbity… the one I bought my little girl has a door set into a cromlech with a smoke stack.

Hobbits. Duh.

Zafarelli25 Jan 2006 4:25 a.m. PST

Here are some nice ones, too:

They are indeed very nice, but could see them having trouble with a certain literary estate and film company…

How about these picture
Removable roof versions and Bag End, coming soon.

CeruLucifus25 Jan 2006 2:16 p.m. PST

Those pieces look great but the prices would make me consider scratch building. I was impressed by GW's terrain tutorials to go with the "Scouring of the Shire" mini-campaign for their LOTR game; here are the online articles and there was some additional material in US White Dwarf around that time.

Thanks friends.

I got mine to gaming when I promised to buy and help her paint her army…

Cacique Caribe31 Jan 2006 2:21 p.m. PST

LOL!
I will buy her whatever army she wants, but I don't think she would let me paint it for her.

My wife started minitures gaming (Warhammer Fantasy Battle) when she met me. As she put it, she was in love with me and it was something I loved to do. When we bought a house together, her army pretty much just got put aside — she was too busy, and when we became parents we got more busy.

But in the last couple weeks she mentioned she wanted something to do after the kids go to bed besides watching TV and how it would be nice to pick her army back up again. I offered to help her paint it. She went for it.

So far we've had three sessions; we got out a block of troops (High Elf archers, about 20). She has picked the color scheme and is telling me what colors to block in — for instance the other night she did primer and I did faces and hands; the next time she did boots and I did armor. It's all her show, I'm just helping by being a pair of hands and giving specific technical advice, when asked. So far she's still into it.

So getting her interested is the hard part. After that, she'll appreciate your hobby knowledge but she'll also be a little intimidated by it, so give her a way to call the shots.

Donrice,
That is exactly what I hope to accomplish. A project we could do and enjoy together. Consider yourself fortunate.

The halflings are coming in and she likes the Copplestone ones that have arrived so far.

As for the hobbit holes, if someone (HELP?) has a tutorial for one with a removable roof, I might scratch build it. Otherwise, I might have to go with a ready-made one with a lift-off roof.

It's a longshot, but if you can get hold of the Battle Games in Middle-earth magazine from Deagostini, there was a pretty good Hobbi Hole tutorial in there. Round about issue 50-52 I think.

Of course, if you're in the States, that doesn't help you at all!

Cacique Caribe05 Apr 2006 1:46 a.m. PST

Unfortunately, I am in the States. Thanks for the information. It might prove valuable to others with similar questions but with better access to the magazine.

The Mirlinton/Grenadier ones just arrived today. Though the moulds must be a little old by now, they look beautiful!

CC,

Thanks for posting the link to the tutorial. Though I have little use for hobbit holes, the techniques shown there should prove useful for all manner of other construction.

The best Hobbit homes are in Bag End, of course: it is the most famousest of Hobbit housing developments….
