I would just reproduce a negative of the pattern with the highlight. I'd probably do some sketches on paper first, just to make sure about the pattern and its position and size. |

I usually just paint it on. for branding effects mix a darker than normal flesh tone with a bit of red-brown (the fresher the brand, the more red). for scarring I just line shade/highlight the design depending on skin tone and the effect. |

I usually score it into the metal or plastic with a pin or xacto knife point then delicately paint and wash. For figures smaller than 28mm, the other suggestions sound fine. |
