The horse and musket period is my favorite one to wargame. I particularly enjoy the Seven Years War. My enthusiasm diminished, however, as I didn't really like any of the rules that were available to me. My latest project as been to develop my own based on a set I developed for the Jacobite Rebellion in 25mm. Here is a link to an update on this undertaking:

Good work. There's something satisfying about using rules you've crafted. We went down the same path some years ago & our home-groan rules work well.

They function well for small battles & mega games. Some photos of our recent EXPO game:

Nice looking armies.

I also like SYW (e.g. prefer it over Napoleonics since there's less "fiddly-ness" dealing with all the skirmishers). And like you, my group started with Die Kriegskunst, which we found "fiddly" in its own right (we also started AWI with British Grenadier, but have moved on from it for the same reason). I've settled on a set of rules I based on Rank & File – I particularly like their battalion gun mechanic. I've seen where a 2nd Edition of R&F has been released, and while I like a couple of things it's done (e.g. 2D6 for morale vs. 1D6), but I'm not enamored with the change they made to battalion guns.

Some nice looking figures in there, mate. Like you and codiver, I much prefer the mid-C18 to the Napoleonic period. I've had a try at doing my own rules (not SYW- I'm happy with Grant) and got a bit frustrated when they wouldn't "play" the way I hoped. So I applaud youse three blokes who got their rules working.

"who got their rules working".

Thank you Dal. I would have to admit if 10 SYW gamers used my rules, 7 would probably hate them. Maybe 9.

Whereas even I hated my rules, Ochoin. They read well, but played like Empire on Valium. So you're still be 30% in front of me, mate.

One day, you'll make it up here & we can give them a whirl.

Perhaps when (if?) we get the farm sold, mate. Know anyone who wants a hilltop, 25 acre property in the Southern Tablelands?

I moved from several acres to an inner city house – small block. Best thing I ever did.
