The French are keeping a tight hold over the ford objective and pouring round shot into the enemy farm, but their cavalry is taking fire from the British right. The British (foreground and left) are proceeding to roll up the French right flank with one battalion now attacking the French fortifications protecting their heavy battery. But they are becoming exposed in the centre. theminiaturespage.com
"TMP link The British are still trying to get into the fortifications to deal with the French artillery which is forcing heavy losses on the British. Meanwhile they straighten their line and push back the French skirmishers. A battalion on their right flank finds a second ford and readies to cross the river. However, there's an upturn in french fortunes. British infantry in the farm runs out of ammunition – the French are still blocking the route their supply wagon should take. Still worse news comes: Allied re-enforcements are delayed. The French take the opportunity to consolidate their line, they are still resisting the assault on their fortifications and one battalion charges the British infantry in the flank before it crosses the new ford. theminiaturespage.com

Allied dragoons have re-formed after taking heavy losses from the French battery and position themselves in support. Fire from the British at the farm dwindles as they run out of ammunition. This leaves the French unmolested as they re-form and check the British left-wing's attempt to roll up their flank. The British assault on the French fortifications (top left) continues to be resisted by skirmishers. theminiaturespage.com
"TMP link The French continue to punish the British: the British battalion that discovered the ford is routed by a French charge. The British assault on the French fortifications is finally repelled with losses and French heavy artillery open up with canister on the British flank. theminiaturespage.com
"TMP link The repelled British battalion re-forms and supports the infantry line threatened by French guard cavalry. But now the British left is under cannister fire. |

The French have gaps in their line but they have two relatively fresh elite cavalry troops and their artillery continues to pound the British left with canister. The British have a good position but they're taking heavy losses and they're running out of ammunition. They could retreat or form square but they have to take the ford. Will they attack? theminiaturespage.com
"TMP link In answer to that, British skirmishers (bottom left) find the French ammunition wagon…. |

The British (marked red) left has consolidated but for how long, as its edges are still under heavy canister fire. They can choose to try to deal with that French heavy battery again, or launch an all-out attack the main French defenders of the approaches to the ford. The French decided to go forward with a couple of battalions but are vulnerable to fire from two sides. theminiaturespage.com

With ammunition falling low for most units, inspired by an inspirational commander (card) and the French right disordered, the British plan for an all-out attack led by Portuguese cavalry is about to launch. They must brave heavy French cannister fire from the fortifications if they are to take the ford before nightfall. I thought the enemy would be a pushover, but just as I commit to the British move, a thunderstorm disorders my cavalry (card) and my daughter rallies the French (marked blue). theminiaturespage.com
"TMP link With the British committed, French skirmishers are pushed back and an infantry melee ensues in the centre. theminiaturespage.com
"TMP link A French battalion crosses to the other side of the river to repel the annoying Caçador skirmishers from the woods there. Despite the loss of battalion in the melee as the sun wends closer to the horizon, French skirmishers return to delay the slow British advance down the road. |
