I originally purchased three Union generals from Battle Honours and whilst pleased with the sculpts was hugely disappointed in their interpretation of 20mm.

However, Michael was very kind and after some picture sizing exchanges he reprinted my order in 1/72 gratis. What a nice man.

Here they are looking very nice indeed.

There are various ACW sections to choose from but the generals and staff were what I was looking for. Their Generals Grant and Hooker are very lifelike. I wish Hooker had been available for the commencement of my action.

Highly recommended and for a small charge you can get them frame free.

Back to the action.

What were you upset with? Too small?

Nice work!

nickinsomerset17 Dec 2024 9:49 a.m. PST

Very nice, I saw, I went, I ordered, glad that 1:72 was offered.

Tally Ho!

CHRIS DODSON17 Dec 2024 11:03 a.m. PST

I originally ordered the sculpts in 20mm but they were very small compared with even Franznap 20mm.

As stated the company were brilliant and1/72 fits perfectly with my Antietam re fight.

Other scales are available and although off topic the Napoleonic and WW11 ranges look exceptional.

Best wishes,

Chris

The blue of the uniforms is awfully light. Union uniforms were a very dark, navy blue.

donlowry18 Dec 2024 12:10 p.m. PST

Yes, I thought they were Confederates when I first saw them.

CHRIS DODSON19 Dec 2024 9:15 a.m. PST

Well spotted, but the colour has been bleached by the artificial light used to highlight the sculpts and in reality is a lot darker.

They will be appearing in my Antietam re fight shortly where they will seen in with a diffused light source which doesn't bleach out colour.

Not sure about the Confederate observation. The officers uniform is rather different from that on display.

i.e. Grey coats ( usually) and rank badges on the arms etc.

Best wishes,

Chris

I meant that the blue was so light that I thought it was blue-gray.

Union generals' coats had velvet colars and cuffs (the latter, in this case, covered by the gauntlets), which made them look almost black. Also, the buttons were arranged in groups of two (for brigadiers) and three (for major generals), but the sculptor didn't do that.

BTW: Isn't 1/72 scale more like 25mm than 20mm?

CHRIS DODSON19 Dec 2024 11:36 a.m. PST

Hi, a good point about the buttons.

In theory from my research 1/72 should be 20mm.

However, my understanding is that 1/72 , OO, HO etc are scales where as 20mm etc are measurements.

The problem for us modellers is that unfortunately some manufacturers ‘interpret' their measurement of choice. Scale creep is a favourite of some manufacturers too. Hat have midgets and giants amongst their 1/72 range.

Ie. 20 mm from base to the eye line or top of the hat for example.

This leads to problems of compatibility.

My original 20mm choice was in fact stated as 20mm but was so small compared to even the wonderful Franznap figurines which are also 20mm.

The beauty of printing and of Battle Honours in particular is that following a selection of size comparisons they reprinted gratis in 1/72 scale.

The TMP discusses this scale thing at length.

1/72 scale means that a 72-inch (6-foot) man would be reduced to 1 inch (25.4 mm).
