Hi folks,

I will stay a week in NY City.

Do you have an any recommendations for a wargamer in regards to stores, museums, places to visit?

Thx in advance

Greets Franz

I suppose Castle Clinton in Battery Park, South Manhattan is an obvious place to visit. It looks better from the outside than it does from inside.

There's an old relevant post which will give you some clues.

Good luck.

I've heard USS Intrepid and USS Growler highly spoken of

The Compleat Strategist is an iconic store.

The Cloisters if you like the Medieval period.

I was up there long ago, when I was young (1982-83). Kind of wish I'd gone to see Grant's Tomb. It's on the "Upper West Side" of Manhattan, but I'm not real sure what that means, except that it's on the southern edge of Harlem. I have no idea how safe or unsafe it is up there, or anywhere in N.Y.C.
Have fun, good luck!

+1 to The Compleat Strategist.

The Strategist is on East 33rd St. on the way to 5th Avenue near the Empire State Building ("ESB"). If you are traveling with family, you can get tickets to tour the ESB, including a trip to the top of the building.

The Intrepid Sea Air Space Museum on the West side (Pier 86 at W.46 St. & 12th Ave.) is also worth the effort.

Enjoy.

I'll second Intrepid & Growler. Terrific

I was at Grant's Tomb about a year ago. It's about five blocks from the Columbia Univ. campus, I walked thru the campus and over to it, didn't feel 'insecure' at any time. Methinks the area's been thoroughly gentrified.

It's an impressive mausoleum, and there are about twenty Civil War battle flags displayed. And that's it for things to see there. Crossed it off bucket list.

If you're interested in ancient or medieval history, the Metropolitan Museum is likely of interest.

Have a great trip !

Many great recommendations above! IIwill just stand like a pygmy on the shoulders of JAFD26 and say: if you have any interest in Medieval and/or Renaissance warfare, I will add the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which stretches from 80th to 84th Streets on 5th Avenue — the major street that runs along the Eastern edge of Central Park.

Their Arms & Armor Gallery is large and impressive. Not equal to the Tower of London, or the Wallace Collection, or the Army Museum in Paris, or the famous one in Austria with a ton of gothic stuff (never been there, sadly) BUT it is the biggest & most impressive such collection I know of here in the USA.

Wherever you go, enjoy yourself & have a great trip!

PS. Just realized: IF you're into the American Revolution/AWI, you may want to visit the Old Stone House in Brooklyn & also a few key spots nearby in Prospect Park and/or Greenwood Cemetery — which played key roles during the August 1776 Battle of Long Island AKA the Battle of Brooklyn. As an AWI fan who grew up in that neighborhood, I had to return and mention it! If you're staying in Manhattan it's not around the corner but it's also not that far away.

I have nothing to add to the ideas above that pertains directly to our hobby. That won't stop me from chiming in about one of my favorite cities, though.

If you like art, architecture, historical restoration, creative public spaces, and people watching, consider walking the High Line, along the west side of Manhattan.

The food in New York is fantastic (and I say that as someone who lives in the San Francisco Bay Area, one of the foodie capitals of the world). You have opportunities to eat anything from anywhere. (I always do.)

Don't wear your Red Sox hat (see below). Have a great visit!
