I am going to be flying over to work in NYC for Mon-Fri next week. What/where are the games and relevant bookshops? Thanks.

I was there 6 weeks ago, and found a Games Workshop store there. I couldn't tell you where it is, though...I found the city to be very confusing! |

The GW Store is in Greenwich Village. For historicals (and plenty of GW, too), there "The Compleat Strategist" on 34th St, between 5th and 6th aves. (Literally in the shadow of the Empire State Bldg.) |

Was Just at the Complete Stragegist. They really do not carry and historical minis though. some plastic historical minis not sure what scale or anything. Tons of RPG and boardgames. As well as GW they have some other Fantasy and Scifi. GW also has I think around 4 different loactions in NYC. |

There's also a GW store on the Upper West Side (72nd & Amsterdam). I have heard there is another now on the Upper East Side. The best on the historical figures is Jan's Hobby Shop where you can find a staggering variety of plastic models at Jan's Hobby Shop (It moved to either 90th or 91st and Lexington). Otherwise, I find the City badly served for historicals. There are two Historical Clubs that might be worth contacting: Metropolitan Wargamers (in Brooklyn)and the New York Wargamers Association (in Manhattan). Their contact information should be on the HMGS site (www.hmgs.org). If not, let me know and I should be able to find it. |

There is also a train store called the Red Caboose on 45th Street near 5th Avenue. It is mostly trains, but they do have a large selection of WWII armor and plane model kits. Also a lot of 1/72nd historical plastics. The phone number is (212) 575-0155.

It has been a while since I last visited the big NYC, but Forbidden Planet was a great store. Two levels with full comic book support, anime, science fiction/fantasy collectables, and RPG/miniature games. I do not remember any historicals or trains, but just about anything else. I seem to remember taking the 1 and the R trains to get there from Govenor's Island, so they would be in Manhatten just south of the park; around 59th-62nd. Good luck. Ray link |

The last time I visited Forbidden Planet, they were a mere shadow of their former selves. A bit brighter, but probably a third of the inventory and maybe half the floorspace. I don't know if this was merely an interim while they brought things up to code or somesuch, but I was very disappointed after all of the visits I led people on to that fabled mecca years before. |

The internet. That's how poorly served historical gamers are here. |

I would suggest Strand book store. They have great military history section. Take any train to Union Sqare(14th street)and go down the Broadway towards 8th street. It's somewere in between, you won't be able to miss it. Forbidden Planet right across the street. There are no stores in New York that sell wargaming historical minis, but Complete Strategist on 33th street is the biggest hobby store with other that GW figures and many boardgames. Email me Igwarg@netzero.net if you want to visit wargaming club in Brooklyn. |

MANY Thanks to everyone. Coming from London I can do GW anytime I need to (rarely, though I did buy their how to paint book). The bookstores look a good bet, and I'll try one or two of the RPG type shops, and possibly the train shop too. What typically is the closing time of a shop in NY? |

Complete Strategist closes at 6pm on most days, open till 10pm, I think, on Thursdays. Strand closes a bit later. |

The God - thanks - looks like Thursday evening though. Just have to persuade the boss he can eat out alone! |
