I ordered the following figures (to play the part of allies for Elizabethan Sea Dogs) and have made some progresss painting about half so far: 24 Foundry Afro-Caribbean Renegades with mixed weapons 8 Black Tree Designs Ethiopians with mixed weapons (IA1196) 16 Foundry Afro-Caribbean Renegades with bows 8 Foundry Darkest Africa Tribal Archers Total: 32 mixed weapons (2 units) and 24 archers (2 units) Has anyone out there ever tried putting together a 28mm force for that period and group? I promise to have pictures when ready. CC |

There was an article about a similar thing in Wargames Illustrated from last fall. Issue # 206 |

You also need Brigades Caribs and headhunters. |

These are Cimarrons, which are runaway African slaves with a great dislike, hatred even, of all Europeans, particularly the Spanish. The Indians, such as "Caribs and headhunters" were the original natives and not of this forcebly imported African group. CC |

Where are the Foundry Afro-Caribbean Renegades on their site? Look for them but couldn't find any reference. |

Kingscarbine, They are one of those "ranges" that did not come out as a full set of 8 packs and, therefore, never got a page of their own. They are officially called "El Dorado Afro-Caribbian Renegades" (spelling is theirs, not mine). There are only 2 packs, but you get one of each of 8 exquisite poses of archers and 8 of mixed weapons warriors. The packs are ED9 and ED10:I believe ED9 has mixed weapons, while ED10 has the archers. Double-check when you call. Fantastic detail! The Black Tree Design Ethiopian pack I mentioned above has figures wearing rags. I think Brigade may still have a few (he has a 20% discount on all BTD packs). They mix well with the Cimarron packs. The Foundry Darkest Africa tribesmen are just a bit smaller, but that just adds to the variety. You will really enjoy that combination. Have fun. CC |

"The Foundry Darkest Africa tribesmen are just a bit smaller, but that just adds to the variety." Remember, they were plucked from all parts of Africa and they were not a physically homogeneous people. Variety adds to the flavor! CC |

Thanks CC, I'm researching the Portuguese expeditions in Morocco, Central West and East Africa during the late 16th century and it's great. A real Renaissance Darkest Africa treat! |

During the 16th century, there was very little difference between the Spanish slave runaways (Cimarrones, Cameroons) and the African natives who found themselves fighting the slavers. Go for it, man!!!! When ready, I should have photos of my Cimarrons with looted Spanish morions and shields. I took latex (and filled them with Greenstuff) and made moulds of Foundry, OG and GW morions to make my Cimarrons look the part!! CC |

And get some thick styrene half-rods (where one side is flat) and flatten and shape them into machetes. I think that is the finishing touch. |

Kingscarbine: "I'm researching the Portuguese expeditions in Morocco, Central West and East Africa during the late 16th century and it's great. A real Renaissance Darkest Africa treat!" What have you found so far? What are you planning on doing? What figures? etc., etc., etc. |

Found info about expeditions in Angola and Mozambique. I was planning to use Foundry Sea Dogs and Conquistadores figures with Afro-Caribians and DA natives. |

Kingscarbine, Do you have any links about those expeditions? Thanks. CC |

CC, What I have is loose notes, taken from various library visits and books bought in old bookshops, that I'm compiling in Word. I can send you an interesting article by John K. Thornton about 16th-17th century warfare in Angola. Cheers |

Ok. Bill has somehow deleted that interesting thread. :( Anyway, if anyone is interested in what I'm trying to do with Arawaks/Tainos/Caribs, now that the Cimarrones are all done, check here: TMP link CC |

Someone just recently asked about the "8 Black Tree Designs Ethiopians with mixed weapons (IA1196)". If anyone else is interested, here is the content of that pack (2 of each): link This is the full contents of the 2 packs of "Foundry Afro-Caribbean Renegades". One pack contains 8 archers, while the other one contains 8 with hand weapons. link Hope this helps and answers any questions about those pack contents. CC link |
