Ok I'll break this up a little. Will you: A: Buy one of the new/rerelease armies that they bring out. B: Play one of the new/rerelease armies, but using official models you already have. C: Play one of the other old armies not yet part of the old world, using official models. D: Play using a proxy model army. E: Not participate. Let us know which army your thinking of and any details you think of interest. I tried to keep the options simple, and focus on the main releases. |
The H Man | 29 Jul 2023 3:26 a.m. PST |
I'm thinking A or B. With beastmen. Although I don't really have any yet. I think it probably best to start a new army, to give the game a go from scratch. Start afresh. Old armies can be adapted later. I want that feeling from so many years back. A new game and new boxes of minis. That said I'm thinking of going old school. The fat blokes army from a tale of 4 gamers. Something like that. Im not sure why he couldn't use plastic beastmen vertically based, rather than horizontal, thus not opting for them? So maybe I'll try to get some. Or just get the new releases, decisions. I'm thinking beastmen, as I've always liked them. Maybe I'll take warriors of chaos too? Could be a fun mix. |

Flashman14, over-produced 32mm miniatures are what the kiddies (ie anyone younger than me) seem to want and think all the greeblies mean quality miniatures. Then they slap on contrast paints because it takes too long to paint them. Weird. E. I left the fold many years ago. Empire was my jam. Is this supposed to be WHFB armies or will it be more skirmish-like gaming? |
Moonbeast | 29 Jul 2023 12:14 p.m. PST |
"supposed to be WHFB armies" This is what it is supposed to be, rank and file combat. A if they bring back the full Tomb Kings range, I've always wanted an army of them, otherwise E. |

Apologies. Clarification due. Games Workshop is soon to release a new game called Warhammer the Olde world. It is basically a new edition of Warhammer fantasy battles that they discontinued a good few years back. They will mostly be rereleasing previous armies with some new figures also. Plastic, resin and Metal have all been mentioned. Apparently they played though all the previous editions to find the best rules they could. Yes, rank and file. The photos shown so far look just like it did. Units of soldiers and a few warmachines and monsters all arrayed for battle. The biggest change so far is a slight base size change from 20 to 25mm. Some other base sizes are going up also. This solves some problems and allows some future proofing, I'm sure. The Game will so far focus on Empire, Bretonnians, High elves, Wood elves, Dwarfs, Orcs and goblins, Warriors of chaos, Beasts of Chaos, Toomb kings. Other old armies will also get some rules, so you can still use your armies, but they are not otherwise part of the game, yet. TMP link There are some good info links here. |
Dave Gamer | 29 Jul 2023 5:34 p.m. PST |
I'll be purchasing the miniatures but to use them with other games systems. Most likely I'll be buying Wood Elves. |
The H Man | 29 Jul 2023 6:34 p.m. PST |
One option I missed. I don't believe wood elves have been shown yet, so it will be interesting to see if there are any major changes. I suspect toomb kings will get the biggest overhaul, being mostly ex Gothic lefties previously. |

I'm interested but I have to see it all first. I had 8 WHFB armies, pretty sure some of them will work. |
Mindstone | 30 Jul 2023 1:04 a.m. PST |
No way will I spend another pound stirling on that game! Especially not to relive nostlagia that was never all that good anyway (we barely finished a game back in the day, it was so complex and clunky). I will still look at the minis out of morbid curiosity though. GW are producing some really good plastics and I'm sure it will be an aesthetic marvel. I've spent over ten years designing my own mass-fantasy game since leaving WHFB and to be honest I don't regret it one bit :) |
The H Man | 30 Jul 2023 2:07 a.m. PST |
"GW are producing some really good plastics and I'm sure it will be an aesthetic marvel" That is a joke, right? If you want to see IKEA wet their pants, send them a box of modern GW. Thankfully it looks like TOW will mostly be rerelease plastics, not the numbered vomit in a box we get these days. And Metal, whoop! Otherwise I get it, I have more GW boxes than games played. Hense my enthusiasm to change that. Basically a BS company with one good thing (mostly), being their flag ship that they sunk. Hopefully there are new people who respect things a bit more working there now?? Or its just a shameless poke in the eye for Ronnie. I think we can (mostly) all agree it's going to be one heck of a train wreck, whether your on board or watching from a safe distance. I just hope it runs right into AOS with enough impact. |
x42brown | 30 Jul 2023 10:15 a.m. PST |
I will say D but as I have a Good selection of figures it may actually be B or C x42 |

Thank you for the clarification, H Man. I figured GW was up to their usual antics, but I couldn't be sure. I suppose the direct answer is E, but since I do have 28mm generic fantasy armies, if the size doesn't get out of whack, I'll keep an eye out for cheap plastic kits or interesting metals once they reach the flea market. New releases of figures never hurt and are sometimes helpful. Tying yourself to a particular company, not so much. |

Puster | 30 Jul 2023 10:44 p.m. PST |
E Though I might be tempted if my old Empire army from 30+ years ago will be usable. Certainly if includes pikes, as I have the odd unit for historical gaming. |
The H Man | 30 Jul 2023 11:41 p.m. PST |
I think price is going to be a big issue. As they appear to be rereleasing so much, probably from old moulds??? It should be easy to let them be quite cheap. It may even be part of their plan to damage kings of war, by letting old figures go cheap, after all if there is no tooling, other than a new date, they will cost almost nothing. Time will tell. In the meantime let's make assumptions. |
The Last Conformist | 31 Jul 2023 6:45 a.m. PST |

Be interesting to see what the rules are like. Always thought the old name Games Workshop was rather ironic. Old rope recyclers probably wouldn't have had quite the same optics though. |
The H Man | 31 Jul 2023 3:15 p.m. PST |
Perhaps an editor will add the following to the beginning of my first post: Games workshop is set to release a new game called Warhammer The old world. Basically, a new edition of Warhammer fantasy battles. They will be rereleasing many of the former games miniatures, along with new ones. Something like that. To avoid further confusion. |
David Johansen | 19 Aug 2023 1:00 p.m. PST |
If the rules are very good I might consider breaking out my Empire army but, honestly, it's round bases so I'm probably out. |
The H Man | 19 Aug 2023 1:13 p.m. PST |
Do you mean your army has round bases, or the old world? Because the old world is going to be on square bases, as it should be. They will be a little larger though. But movement trays can help. If your army is on round bases, again movement trays may help. Even just blutac or glue them to other bases or pieces of card. |

Only a modicum of GW bashing here. Nice job. I'll go with option: G. Will evaluate the game. Will evaluate the minis. If I like either, I'll buy them. Historically, I've not like any of the GW TTG rulesets. That doesn't make them bad, or juvenile, or [insert derogatory term here]. It just means I have not seen that they would reasonably lead to a gaming experience I would enjoy. Original Space Hulk is the closest. At this stage, the game would have to pass the threshold of "I already have a number of things I already like". In the gray zone, I would look for games to participate in. I don't "like GW minis", because as a unit, that's a lot of things. I do have quite a few that I like, but I would guess that is a small proportion of their entire inventory. Then again, that's again, that's a good way to run a business – a diversified portfolio of sustainable products. A diversified portfolio of sustainable means everyone will not want most of what you have, but they will decide to purchase a subset. That leads to the other part of my interaction. Generally, the pricepoint is too high (or … I don't like them that much), so I will likely only buy on the secondary market. |
The H Man | 20 Aug 2023 6:34 a.m. PST |
The secondary market can be worse. A garage sale tossing out old Toys, maybe, but certainly not a lot on eBay and the like. Then there's the competition for cheaper alternatives. I like to think GW will be doing some cheap options, especially if they are just rereleasing older stuff. Maybe I'm being overly optimistic? |
etotheipi | 20 Aug 2023 5:47 p.m. PST |
My price point is $1 USD per infantry figure that I am going to paint or convert. I have tons of GW figures from the secondary market like that. Not WHFB, but 100 SM
$1 USD ea except for the terminatures and wofen. <$.60 skinks
$1 USD beastmen with frickin' lasers

The H Man | 21 Aug 2023 2:34 a.m. PST |
Cool stuff. Mantic can be about that, even a touch less. GWs cheapest I've seen new is almost double that. Still cheap options though, for brand new boxes of Minis. Actually I think Mantic will get cheaper as TOW comes out. Empire of dust seems the cheapest yet. It will.be interesting to see how their datk elves price. |
