Video says they did use smoke initially, and had foggy weather conditions. What got them detected was the sound of the boats (engineers). |

Should have used electric boat:) Much less noise. Apart from that They should have allocated much greater resources. Helicopter assault to secure the far side. Much more artillery to suppress and as counter battery. Diversonary crossings, multiple crossing sites spaces apart. With all resources and done correctly a forced crossing is still very difficult and risky. |

It looks like they didn't anticipate the crossing would be detected and contested. They were probably spotted by satellite -- commercial or another country, and then drones were used to verify, observe and call in artillery. |
