Something Hannibal mastered over 2000 years ago is now a lost art, apparently:

Hannibal didn't have to do it under arty fire.

That would be on the list as being one of the "secrets" that have been forgotten….

No smoke, no diversionary crossings to keep the defenders guessing. Basically, a classic demonstration of how not to force a river crossing

You gotta get up pretty early to snooker a drone.

Video says they did use smoke initially, and had foggy weather conditions. What got them detected was the sound of the boats (engineers).

Should have used electric boat:) Much less noise.

Apart from that They should have allocated much greater resources. Helicopter assault to secure the far side. Much more artillery to suppress and as counter battery. Diversonary crossings, multiple crossing sites spaces apart.

With all resources and done correctly a forced crossing is still very difficult and risky.

Rather than 1 BTG lost it is probably 2.

A summary of the crossing attempt by Dan: So the RuAF Bilohorivka crossing was a disaster.

1 BTG from 74 Guards Motor Rifle Bde and 1 BTG from 35 MR Bde probably destroyed.

At least 6 fleeing T72s appear to have been driven into the river, with turret pointing to the rear. The crew probably swam for it.

It looks like they didn't anticipate the crossing would be detected and contested. They were probably spotted by satellite -- commercial or another country, and then drones were used to verify, observe and call in artillery.

I think we are talking about the same river crossing – TMP link
