Hi, Is anyone here familiar with doing RPGs solo ? – I see more and more rules for doing various ttrpgs solo and this kind of appeals to me ,l

I would like to know where to start with regard to doing a ttrpg solo

rmaker30 Apr 2022 5:07 p.m. PST

Start with Tunnels and Trolls. There are over 25 solo adventures for T&T.

You could try Rangers of Shado Deep, basically a solo RPG that is cheap to get into. I enjoyed it.

I second the recommendation for Tunnels and Trolls, though my experience is exclusively with the 5e. I would also suggest looking at TwoHourWargames as their dungeon delving sets are great and specifically designed for solo and same side adventuring.

Rebel Minis now has 2hour Dungeon Crawl which was created by TwoHourWargames, as well as other fantasy titles from THW.

Coyotepunc here on TMP reported on a solo fantasy game, and a later a campaign using "Five Leagues from the Borderlands." This is a Nordic Weasel game. TMP link

Over on the Atomic Floozy Adventures blog, there are three or four campaigns going using various rules from the Two Hour Wargames stables. atomicfloozy.com THW rules are geared to solo play with various tables to determine how the other side acts.

Hopefully reading the descriptions of the games will give you an idea of what features you'd like in your games.

Rebel Minis sells old THW's rulesets.
I strongly recommend you to have a go at Warrior Heroes Adventures in Talomir from Two Hour Wargames, specifically designed for solo narrative Fantasy RPG.
What their shop says about it:

"Our updated and final Fantasy version.

What: Sword and Sorcery Fantasy rules.
Scale: Man to Man skirmish level.
Your Role: Lead a small group of Adventurers in a variety of Adventures.
Playability: Designed for solo, same-side, and head to head play.

Playable with the counters we've included or any minis you may already have. In Warrior Heroes Adventures in Talomir you explore the Fantasy world of Talomir, home to a wide variety of unique Races. Build your Band with a variety of Characters. Track the progress of your Star, you, with light bookkeeping. Gain rewards when you succeed, suffer penalties when you fail.

Inside you'll find:
Over 40 unique Races and Nations to play.
140 color counters.
Play on the 2 color Battle Boards that are included or the tabletop.
A variety of Attributes to make your Characters unique.
Multiple Character Classes to choose from.
An easy Campaign Tracking system to see if your Star, you, increases in skill while gaining Fame and Fortune.
Over a dozen unique Adventures to have; some you choose, some are thrust upon you. All this and much more."

thanks for the links – i have been looking at those Two Hour Wargames products – i like how they make solo play an aspect of alot of their games

though i guess i wasnt clear in my original post though as what i am really getting was more not the games designed specifically as solo rpgs but rather the efforts people have taken to undertake typical GM based rpgs solo, and whether folks here have any experience in this approach.
i have seen a range of GM-emulators out there like Mythic and would like to attempt somethign with something like Harnmaster or Rolemaster, but perhaps something like DnD might be easily.

I do have Tunnels and Trolls solo gamebooks, alot of them though the gamebook approach (and i do love gamebooks like Lone Wolf) is not what i was interested in but rather generating a character and attempting to build a story in a particular fantasy world.

Depends on what your emphasis is— actual role playing or just a dungeon crawl.

Ganesha Games Four Against Darkness is terrific for the latter— you can control an entire adventuring party traveling through a randomly created dungeon triggering a variety of encounters which build to a Big Bad. The heroes improve along the way, as well as finding magic items. Old school and a nice time killer.

HeroQuest is back and playable solo thanks to their free proprietary app which takes on the role of Zargon (the game's GM). Again, it's a basic dungeon crawl. Note that the app is free, but the game retails for $125. USD You can play the app without the board or the minis, but you'll still need the card decks, so a copy of the board game is essential.

But the above are not true roleplaying games, where the personality of the character and the antagonists matter as much as the dice and the cards.

This is some old stuff, but still having more output.

Mellee, Wizard lead to "The Fantasy Trip" (TFT) and there are programmed solo adventures in the form, turn right, go to page 57, turn left go to page 112.

I have not do these for over 40 years, so no real statement of quality here, but the combat resolution is via the Mellee/Wizard system which also evolved into the GURPS RPG system.

A quick search turned up:

wow that GURPS stuff is just never ending – that would be a expensive endeavour in itself to.

I do have a few RPG books already that i should probably attempt somethign with first – the Wheel of Time RPG, Mongoose publishings Lone Wolf RPG, GW's 1st edition Warhammer fantasy RPG, and GW's Stormbringer rpg (i fell in lvoe with the cover art of that book, – my favorite artist Peter A Jones) and some others like Call of Cthulhu TnT and DnD5e

a basic dungeon crawl i can easily see how one could do that solo, and there look to be ample tools for generating dungeons,
but i was interested in doing some more free form and i read an interesting attempt someone reported on online, i forget teh site, about doing Harnmaster solo and it was brutal and short but i liked the setting and mission the person had made, just how one goes about determining these things i want to better figure out

"But the above are not true roleplaying games, where the personality of the character and the antagonists matter as much as the dice and the cards."

thats a good point of distinction and so i think an approach where the exact options available to the player would be dictated by the character they are playing , but i suppose that is general to all ttrpgs yes? solo and group?

Stryderg01 May 2022 7:38 p.m. PST

The easiest way to do this is to ask a lot of yes/no questions or questions that can be answered with a simple die roll.

You enter a town. Is it 1=very large, 2=large, 3=medium, 4=small, 5-6=tiny
Does it have a wall: 1-3=yes, 4-6=no
A wall implies guards, how many guards: 1/2d6

You just have to fill in the ambiance and come up with situations that make sense. And take a lot of notes in case your team runs into recurring characters.
