Another resin 3D print model here bought through Shapeways, from the catalog of Brown Water Navy Miniatures, the CSA Stonewall Jackson, which was part of the Confederate River Defense Fleet during the war.

The model was really clean, and free of any 3D support webbing, with a little roughness displayed on the hull sides, but elsewhere it was very smooth. The ship came with two printed mast integral with the model, which I cut off and replaced with my own versions made from brass tubing and rod, which I can remove from drilled holes in the hull if needed. The flag is in a convenient place on the rear mast, non-standard in its location, but safely mounted on this wargaming model.

The scout gunboat Grampus, also from BWN Miniatures, which is in the background, I previewed in this TMP thread -

Both these rebel gunboats I plan to include in a Mississippi River scenario or two, inspired by the skirmishing that occurred around Columbus, Kentucky early in the war.

Nice review!
I too, have been eyeballing these minis and your review has moved me closer to a purchase!
The muddy water is perfect!
And you never once mentioned the size of your flags (Latin: flagus enviosus)!
Refreshing…

cheers

Matt Lawson does great work. I had a fair sized collection of the 1/600th ships a couple years ago. In fact, many of the painted examples on his site were done by me.

Lovely as ever.

In the absence of being converted to waterline models have you considered painting the edging the same as the river or is that a lighting issue on the picture?

Marvellous stuff.

Best wishes,

Chris

Thanks! That looks really great! Of course Shapeways being Shapeways they now say they won't print the Jackson unless I make some adjustments to it, which I will, but it's still frustrating to fix things that have printed multiple times.

I can also print any of my ships on my resin printer if there are those who don't want to go through Shapeways and I can sell them cheaper than what I have to on Shapeways. Just send me a message on that site!

MG Lawson, you make some great ships. I have many. Thanks.

Guys, thanks for all your encouraging comments.

Thanks to Matt also for making this 3D model available by special request! (glad you like how it turned out after it got some paint on-board)

I've also "recruited" Mac Cross, author of the Blood, Sweat & Iron rules to make up a couple ship cards for the Grampus and Stonewall Jackson, to use with his rules.

This little ACW project has had a few hands on deck to help bring it off – many thanks to this great community here at TMP for your generous support!

I'm another Matt Lawson fan. I've purchased a fair number of his ACW ships, but I've also grabbed some of his 1/1250 scale Spanish American War ships. Very detailed and very good stuff.

Hi Armand,

Btw, the CSS Stonewall ironclad was quite a different vessel from the cottonclad CSS Jackson (and Stonewall Jackson).
