If I were to buy 28mm "orc-like" apes for that scenario, who would you recommend? Right now, I am thinking adding some greenstuff to 40 Thunderbolt Mountain Goblins (20 archers and 20 heavies), to make them more ape-like: link Would those pass as the guardians of that lost Atlantean outpost? |
John the OFM | 01 Oct 2005 10:02 a.m. PST |
Hasslefree's "Vadim" strikes me as an orc-like ape. It's a shame to modify the TM goblins, but the price is right. Why not contact Hasslefree and see if they can supply you with ape-like heads? And, one of my future projects is a "Lost City" scenario. The Foundry Nubian command and nobles are a perfect African Lost city type, being Negroes in Egyptian clothing. Thr Nubian warriors make perfect
Nubians. |

Wow. I see what you mean!!! Very ape-like indeed. Too bad the "Vadim" Orc/Goblin only comes in one pose (or am I wrong?). CC |

We used troglodites but Im not sure of the manufacturer. If The Gorb sees this he might post the maker. |

I am still waiting for someone to do a Tarzan movie/series that actually adheres to the ERB novels. How about you guys? |
Mugwump | 01 Oct 2005 4:54 p.m. PST |
That being my favorite Tarzan novel (who can resist La of Opar?) If I recall right the men of Opar looked like brutes not apes, although they mated with apes at times. I would think that pulp figures neanderthals/cavemen would do the job fine. Simply use some of that greenstuff to cover the skins with egyptian/mesopotamian (sp) type clothing and substitute bronze weapons for the stone clubs/spears the cavemen have. For the apes, maybe something from One Hundred Kingdoms or some knock off of planet of the apes might work. Be sure to post the alterations if you do them. Mugwump |

By the way, does anyone have a link to the picture shown on the cover of the novel? That is the look I am trying to achieve. But I can only go from memory. |

Which edition? There are probably a dozen US editions alone along with foreign ones too numerous to count. Plus the number of comics over the years make the artistic interpretations of Tarzan and the Jewels of Opar a large field to search. You might try ERBzine on the web to do a search of their archives for covers. Mugwump P.S. the first appearance of La of Opar was in The Return of Tarzan. I know she had a latter appearance in Tarzan the Invincible. |

I think that is Neal Adams work on some of the last run of tarzan novels. Boris also was in that series along with some other artists. In front of me I have Joe Jusko's: Art of Edgar Rice Burroughs. I know Frank Cho does some excellent pen and ink drawings from ERB libertymeadows.com and you can probably get hundreds of interpretations off of the web and resultant artists sites. Hopefully you can find something more detailed as I cannot make out the distant figures on that cover for anything (and I have a 19" monitor!) Keep us posted, Mugwump |

Mugwump, Can you tell who made the cover I have on the link? I cannot, but that is the edition I had when I first read the novels. Thanks. CC |

Mugwump, Sorry. I did not know you had already posted that you could not make it out. I will try to do a more detailed search. Thanks. CC |

Sorry. Gotta give up the search for now. Will resume in the morning . . . long day at work today. |

I'd like to thank everyone for suggesting various "ape" solutions. Not that I plan to do this particular scenario, but it got me out to the garage for a while in the early evening staring at disparate groups of figures and letting my imagination run wild. The one that seems to want to gel into a concrete game idea the most is Kroot versus Viet Cong

This takes me back, weren't there 2 Tarzan novels set in Opar? It's been a long time since I read these novels but I did enjoy them. Philip Jose Farmer also wrote a couple of prequels concerning Hadon of Opar set around the time of their cataclysm. Now then what have I done with my Tarzan novels (which were falling apart when I got them about 20 years ago). I've got a hankering to read them again. Please let us know how the scenario plays? |
Mugwump | 02 Oct 2005 10:04 a.m. PST |
The two Opar novels by Phillip Jose Farmer are: "Hadon of Opar" and "Flight to Opar." I found them to start a bit slow but the story picked up and reached an enjoyable pace after a while. The part which I enjoyed with these DAW books was the Roy Krenkel illustrations in them. You should be able to pick up copies in a used paperback store. Mugwump |

I have run Opar by GASLIGHT at several cons. Never the same ending twice. For the Oparian females I use Eureka's Amazons. Axewomen and archers for units and the hoplites for leaders. For the Oparian males I use Eureka's Neanderthal Warriors. The fellows with the antlers are used as the leaders. "The Return of Tarzan" was the first book and "Tarzan and the Jewels of Opar" was the second. Regards, the Gorb |

Oh- La also appeared in "Tarzan and the Golden Lion", "Tarzan the Invincible" as mentioned by Mugwump, and "Tarzan and the Tarzan Twins" (which was originally published as two separate stories and is aimed at younger readers). Regards, the Gorb |
