"Rubber stamping vehicle markings?" Topic

I'm painting many many 10mm tanks and I'm sure I can't freehand an allied star to save my life. I wonder if anyone has tried using tiny rubber stamps to place these markings?

I've not come across one, but got a metal stencil for doing stars and the results were rubbish.

If doing a five pointed star freehand is a matter of life or death my mother (who was an art teacher) taught me how to do it – start with an upside down "V", then draw the horizontal line, then joint the ends of the horizontal line to the opposite ends of the upside down "V" (with a bit of practice it produces far better results than the stencil).

I will try practicing your suggestion. I have tried using stencil before andI agree the results are bad since it can't really seal to the surface.

Why not use decals? link

Many years ago I made a stamp for the Allied white star. It was OK but I spent as long tidying up the star with a paint brush I could have done without the stamp.

Decals are the WWII gamer's friend.

I had the same idea some years ago but never got any further would be interested to hear from people who have tried it – I suspect the experience would be the same as Jim Duncan's but I really don't get on with decals.

This one looks mighty small, you may want to cut away the extra stars. The moon is separate stamp

I'd go with decals.

I tried carving one from an eraser but the problem was that when I pressed it, the paint would spread out and fill in the tight angles.

Might just have to work on my freehand. At least for german crosses I can use a fine tip sharpie.

I actually just posted a very similar question on another forum. I was thinking (in the short term) about Space Marine shoulder insignia, but the application for tanks, Sashimono, and other relatively regular, flattish surfaces also occurred to me. They both have some (possibly) useful tips.

The main takeaway I got was that this is potentially tricky to get right, and that purpose-made rubber stamp material and stamping inks are more likely to work well than improvising with pencil erasers and regular acrylic paint.

Thanks for the links, I think I will try chicklewis suggestion of using spray paint and a stencil.
