Looking for a good book on these early battles of Napoleon since I want to game them one day. Wish Osprey will do a book on it but they haven't yet.

A very interesting period containing Napoleon's first victories and also his first defeat at Caldiero. Sadly, as interesting as this period is, there does not appear to be as many titles available (in English anyway) compared to the amount available that cover the later campaigns and period when Napoleon became Emperor.

Here are some titles that may be of help.

The Campaigns of Napoleon by David Chandler
Attack in the West by W.G.F Jackson
The Road to Rivoli by Martin Boycott Brown
Castiglione 1796 by Bernhard Voykowitsch
The Rise of General Bonaparte by Spenser Wilkinson
A Military History and Atlas of the Napoleonic Wars by Esposito & Elting
Napoleon's Campaigns in Italy by Philip Haythornthwaite (Osprey Men-at-Arms 257)
Napoleon's Great Adversary by Gunther Rothenberg
Napoleon's Military Machine by Philip Haythornthwaite

Various memoirs, such as Massena and Murat, contain info and extracts on the early actions, plus, if you can get access to them online – The Bonaparte Letters and Despatches. (Saying that, I believe Volume 1 of these letters might be available via Amazon)

This article may also be on interest.

Another article:
The Despatches of Colonel Thomas Graham on the Italian Campaign 1796-1797, found in The English Historical Review, Vol 14, No 53,, January 1899.

I hope these help.

Just found three more, which might be of interest. I've not seen them so can't make any comments. But they are on my ever growing list to buy. However, they do appear to be fairly short books.

Napoleon's 1796 Italian Campaign by Carl von Clausewitz

Napoleon's First Campaign by Herbert H. Sargent

The Campaigns of Napoleon Bonaparte 1796-1797 by Gustav Joseph Fiebeger

All good stuff there too, Thanks for adding to the list, Gazzola!

No problem. I'm not sure if they can still be obtained but I should have also added the articles that can be found in First Empire magazine:

The Battle of Castiglione 1796 by John Walsh (First Empire, Issue No 23, June-July 1995)
The Battle of Arcole 1796 by John Walsh (First Empire, Issue no 24, August-September 1995)
The Battle of Rivoli 1797, Part 1, by John Walsh (First Empire, Issue No 25, October-November 1995)
The Battle of Rivoli 1797, Part 2 by John Walsh (First Empire, Issue No 26, December 1995-January 1996)

Go to Rivoli-To Rivoli-march by Bernhard Voykowitsch (First Empire, Issue 35, June-July 1997)
The Battles of Lonato, 1796 by Bernhard Voykowitsch (First Empire, Issue 36, August-September 1997)
