Basically, all the Revolutionary campaigns by the French in Italy. Are there any good, readable, wargamer friendly treatments of the campaigns? Something that has an easy going writing style with just enough facts and combat imagery to inspire gaming? In French or in English? |

Do you include the Consulate? If so Arnold's Marengo and Hohenlinden is a great read even if only one of the battles is in Italy. Osprey also do a good book on Marengo and the Olivier Lapray book on Marengo is another pictorial feast. I also recommend Napoleon in Italy: The Sieges of Mantua. Others would be The Road to Rivoli and the appropriate volumes of The Armies of the First French Republic but they are heavier going and lacking in illustrations. |

The Road to Rivoli for the first Italian campaign. Without doubt the best book on the subject out there. For Marengo, the Osprey Campaign volume, Arnold's book on Marengo that includes Hohenlinden, and a newer book called Marengo: The Victory That Placed the Crown of France on Napoleon's Head. |

Road to Rivoli, certainly. Also, as the translator responsible, I feel obliged to recommend Clausewitz: Napoleon's 1796 Italian Campaign link As Dr Citino's review comments, this "has it all: flash campaign narrative, deep analysis, and snide remarks about Jomini". Watch out for the 1799 volumes as well, to be published later this year. Chris Bloody Big BATTLES! groups.io/g/bloodybigbattles bloodybigbattles.blogspot.com |

A GOOD, Solid effort here, interspersed with halfway decent OB's also, especially for the period when they were pretty much ignored. The Campaigns of Napoleon Bonaparte of 1796-1797 – Fieberger link Compliments "The Road to Rivoli" quite nicely too! |

Long time ago I read an article in the French army historical magazine that the Corsican had a well placed spy right into the Austrian staff. The only problem was time delay to transmit info. So he knew before hand of pkans for ex. Of the 97 attempts to relieve Mantova. Makes genius easier. |
