Could someone explain some of the systems used to put numbers on the turrets of Soviet tanks, particularly in the early war period? I've heard some different systems were used, and that these were replaced with a more unified approach around 1944. I haven't heard, however, exactly what the earlier systems were?

I guess that was a Soviet trait for anything. Mig-21 numbers were assigned by the local command. You could see what regiment it was in by the color of the tail number. But the same number could be duplicated in any number of regiments.
