Upper is the regiment number. Lower is the brigade tactical number. I think. |

Depended on the unit and the year – there wasn't much uniformity in the early war. Otherwise Jakar Nilson is mostly correct. |

Sometimes, it depended. Zalogas 'Eastern Front Armor, Camouflage and Markings 1941-45' goes into it. |

In fact, the Russians sometimes numbered their tanks the same number to confuse the Huns. These would be the larger numbers painted on the turret sides. Jakar is correct about the numbers in the diamonds. |
