What is your favorite nation or faction from the new Team Yankee book set in the Middle East, Oil War?

Bashytubits19 Apr 2019 9:58 p.m. PST

Exxon Mobile.

British Petroleum?

I'm impressed that the Israelis have Pereh missile carriers in the army lists (and models, even!), and I've been a fan of the Merkava for an immensely long time.

Israelis obviously because they're the "good guys" and have the cooler and more advanced weaponry. It's probably going to be hard finding opponents who would play the Iraqis and Iranians in this game.

Boxed sets are coming out for Israel, Iraq and Iran. The rules supposedly cover Syria as well.

It's probably going to be hard finding opponents who would play the Iraqis and Iranians in this game.

Iran gets Chieftains and Cobras. grin

Iraq gets T-72s and Gazelles.

Just checked out the new book yesterday at my FLGS. The Iraqis and Iranians both have an interesting and eclectic mix of equipment from both Soviet and western sources, whether they're bought or captured.

Iraq: Before GW1 Hussein was a "friend of the west" so France provided Gazelle helos, APC's (AMX-10P), 4-wheeled AT vehicles (Panhard VCR/TH with HOT missiles), SAM's (AMX Roland) and SPG's (AMX AUF1). They also have the Czech OT-64 transport. The tank battalions are still strictly Soviet: T-72M's, T-62's and older T-55's. BMP-1's and BTR-60's form the bulk of their mechanized battalions (no BMP-2). Iraqis can have a NATO formation as allies and fixed-wing air support from the US in the form of A-10's and Harriers.

Iran: Before 1979 secular Iran was a major customer of western arms, so British Chieftains and American M60's equipped its tank companies. However, the M68 105mm gun on their M60's has less penetration power (AP18) than those of the Israeli Magach 6 (AP19), just as the latter's is less powerful than the gun on US M60's (AP20). Their Cobra gunships are identical to Israeli ones in game terms, but somehow the fact that they should be Sea Cobras with curved canopies bugs me a little. Iran's main APC is the ubiquitous M113. Soviet equipment in the Iranian arsenal are either captured, bought in the 1970's or acquired through third parties like China and North Korea during the Iran-Iraq War. Iran can have WP allies and Soviet SU-25 Frogfoot Aviation Company as fixed-wing air support.

The Syrians use the same army list as the Iraqis but without the western equipment.

Israel only uses indigenously produced and US equipment, with the sole exception of the ZSU-23-4 Shilka AA gun. They are surprisingly "homogenous" compared to Iran and Iraq. I thought they are renowned for improving on and using captured equipment.

If I ever start an army in OW (I probably won't), Israel would still be my first choice by a wide margin.

Olives.

I'm very torn between getting an Iraq or Iran army
both have things I like and both have things I'm not to fussed about.

at the moment I'm learning more to Iran but the other day it was more to Iraq so we'll have to wait and see which one I end up

I'm not fussed about Israel and Syria is just a poor mans Iraq

Actually scratch that – just ordered the Iranian card pack and starter set

Good for you. Be sure to add it to the ongoing thread: TMP link

Wish they made the correct Cobra variant (AH-1J) though, with curved windshields and twin turboshafts.

When I got into the USMC for TY, I went to great lengths (and no small expense) tracking down and buying 4x Franklin Mint 1/100 AH-1T Sea Cobras because I flatly refuse to use the default TY Cobra which is an Army AH-1S. I later added 4x AH-1W Whiskey Cobras for post-1985 battles. Does that make me "anal"?

Maybe a bit. But hey, it's your collection so do what makes you happy.

I get the impression that Iraq and Iran are here because the good follows at Battlefront realized that they already made most of these kits for other armies (Chieftains,M60s, T72s/T55s/T62s and etc), so it's just a small matter of reboxing existing kits… So why bother going through the expense of creating an obscure kit that only a couple of factions use when you can take a chopper from an existing major faction and repurpose it?

Good history? Not so much. Good marketing and use of existing resources/assets? You betcha!

Lion in the Stars23 Apr 2019 8:28 p.m. PST

Except if BF had made an AH1J for the Marines, that would have been correct for the Iranians.

Roughly half the world uses the single-engine AH1. The other half uses the twin-engine Seacobra.

=============

For maximum snicker-factor, you can play as the Israelis with Iraqi allies.

Because the Israelis can take any NATO ally, and Iraq is a NATO ally for Oil War!
