Way back when Ral Partha came out with their colonial range with Zulus they included a pack of mounted Zulus. You know I had to buy a half unit (6 figures). While there is plenty of evidence of Zulu mounted induna I have been able to find few references to rank and file mounted Zulus. The was the report of 14 mounted Zulus seen before Isandhlwana in quite a few sources. I have found two other references to mounted Zulus: 1) Morris "The Washing of the Spears" talks about Mehlokazulu (son of Sihayo) having 30 mounted and 50 foot crossing into Natal to recover his mother. 2)Lock "Blood on the Painted Mountain" the Border Horse was chased by mounted elements in front of the Umcityo regiment. Can anyone else come up with more? Thanks, Vince

Vince, a late response here, but I've recently been searching for the same information. Apparently Zibhebhu at times commanded a band of mounted Zulu scouts during the AZW, and mounted warriors in the Zulu civil wars - link link I'd like to assemble a small unit – found this link with some figure possibilities (any other choices ideas for 28mm equivalents I wonder?) - TMP link |
