I thought the title might get your attention.

In my reading, it seems the more important Zulus did have some horses. I am aware that the Zulus fielded no cavalry as such but it seems a few mounted scouts may have been used sometimes.

Does anyone use mounted Zulu figures? We use the TSATF rules & I'm thinking about the possibility of integrating a few. Any suggestions?

I have a horse on the commander's base – more as a status symbol than for any actual purpose.

Leaders were sometimes mounted. I'd like some in 20mm!

Minifigs 15mm Zulu command has commander on what appears to be a mule.

Ral Partha did a mounted Induna. I wonder if they'd be considered close to "20mm" now.

Any special rules? I mean scouts work both ways. If you see scouts, you know the main army can't be far away.

The British didn't always make that connection.

Some of my Zulu generals get to ride a horse.

Yes a couple of my mthomshloti have horses, I'd go with a zebra for one of them too, Black Tree Miniatures have mounted Induna. Nowadays they ride around in pricey mercs with a blue-light cavalcade pushing all other drivers off the road.

For TSATF one mounted and one dismounted officer for each 3 units.

The dismounted officer stays with the impi and the mounted officer moves to the hill where the (also mounted) army commander sets up to view the battle. The mounted officer will only rejoin his impi when the dismounted commander is put out of action.

Additionally, I have one impi that has a 6 man mounted scout unit that is also armed with rifles.

It has no battlefield benefit, however, it does give a scouting bonus on events leading up to the battle.

I recall an incident during the 2nd Boer War when a Boer Commando, pursued by the British, strayed into Zulu territory and were attacked by mounted Zulus. I think it's in one of the London Illustrated News books on the war. There's a great illustration called "Settling Old Scores" or similar and shows the Zulus engaging the Boers with hand weapons, one brandishing a knobkerri about to brain an unlucky Boer. That illustration alone made me want to collect a unit of mounted Zulus.

I seem to recall that Ral Partha actually made a pack of "Zulu Scouts," four or five figures specifically posed to place on horseback (carrying knobkerries, I seem to think).

I believe I still have some among my old collection, but they're buried to deep for a quick check.

In any case, I say let them appear as any other scouts in TSATF/800FE!

For a skirmish game I think that a few mounted Zulus would not go amiss. For a big wargame I might chuck them in as colour. I have a few mounted Zulus but they are all used as command figures. Black Tree ones I think they are.
