Saw this in a store today, thought "hmm…might be interesting"

Saw the prices.

Thought "What in the name of all that's holy! £35.00 GBP for one troll miniature? Is this for real?"

Turns out – yes, it is for real.

The core set at £90.00 GBP I thought…well, ok.

But the figure boosters make X-Wing look cheap !

And they aren't even painted !

So, my original question: does anyone actually play this game?

Wackmole916 Dec 2018 2:30 p.m. PST

I am also interested but it would be a really expensive game with all the figure sets. I do wonder with you can only get the character cards if you buy the figures?

Never heard of it. Makes GW look like a bargain.

Yes, I was thinking of getting it for my daughter but it is too pricey. Harry is a money maker!

There is another gaming option.

Either way, you really are getting what you pay for.

Knight Models' Batman miniatures game is similarly priced. I have a significant quantity of Batman figures, but I got them at Miniature Market and Ebay at markdown prices that made them quite reasonable.

The big problem with the figures is that they were obviously manufactured by people who have no clue about casting figures. On virtually every one, there is a hand, or a head, or a foot or some other little bit that has to be glued on. For all of these, there is so little surface area that the part needs to be pinned. But there is never any need for the random assembly. Other miniature manufacturers routinely cast those as single parts. It's as if they said … "hey, lets' leave the head off this one" just to annoy the gamers."

About 6-8 months ago someone posted about using the Nano figures and writing rules for the Harry Potter universe. Maybe he will see this thread and give us an update.

The system has been on the pre-order lists of several distributors for many months.
Not historical, so I had no interest on adding any for my store.

The figures look nice in the photos, but the reviews haven't been kind to the components or gameplay…

I preordered the game and several miniatures. The game mechanics seem on par with WizKids' old Star Wars Miniatures rules. Spells and Potions instead of Force Abilities. Some unique game mechanics. Wish game tokens were on a thicker card stock. Game boards are alright but I predict hinge will eventually break after a lot of gaming or age. Miniatures – Pro: Fantastic amazing Sculpting. All details were crisp and had no molding problems. Maybe just early runs. Con: Very very brittle resin cast and a few sculpts not very sturdy for gaming with. I am an experienced gamer and modeler. Almost all figures with an extended hand holding a wand. Wand broke off. I'm in the process of trying to fix them. A couple of poses, Hermione and Beletrix, are so fragile I couldn't repair or reinforce. For playing with kids, I'm using the Nano Metalfigs. Hope this helps.

Certainly does ! Thanks .

Your experience pretty much clinches it for me – I'll avoid the official figures (tbh pretty much already decided it was a non-starter!). For £30.00 GBP for 1 figure I'd expect it to be cast from Titanium! Fragile figures at that price is really not on IMHO.

WizKidz never did a Star Wars game- do you mean WOTC? I assume so from the description. I am interested in this game for my daughter on the one hand, but on the other, she's not really that into miniatures and when I think Harry Potter, I don't really think of battles. Sure, the last book had one, but that was a major exception. Harry Potter at it's heart is a series of mystery stories solved by teenagers who happen to be wizards. It's a bit more like Hardy Boys/ Nancy Drew with magic rather than teams of wizards battling it out with one another. Seems an odd choice for a game centering on combat.

ShieldSlinger17 Dec 2018 8:04 p.m. PST

TGerritsen – You are correct my mistake on the Star Wars Game. Sorry. They were more like small skirmishes or encounters than "combat". Similar to facing off with a Troll, repelling Dementors, an encounter with Death Eaters at the Ministry of Magic or facing He-Who-Will-Be-Named in at the Riddle gravesite. There are Campaign, Adventure and event cards. Also artefact cards to searched for. The game mechanics don't look bad. It cost versus fragility of the miniatures you may not like.

Ah, that makes sense. The cost and apparent fragility still give me pause. I'll keep an eye on it for now.

Norrins18 Dec 2018 4:29 a.m. PST

Are the rules available separately?

ShieldSlinger18 Dec 2018 11:16 a.m. PST

As far as I know, rules are not separate right now. All products were just released. Maybe in the future they will be available alone or pdf download. Not sure what is typical for Knight Models in the past.

I notice some sellers on e-bay, who kept the miniatures and sold the game components. I pick up a set for $52 USD
