For games that take place in Darkest Africa, Megafauna in prehistoric times, or even Barsoom or some other alien planet, or just hunting bison in the Old West …

Other than towards a cliff, where else would hunters stampede big prey animals?

What specific terrain feature (natural or not) would be needed?

Thanks

Dan

PS. I always think of the scene in Crocodile Dundee 2 when, after all the action is over, Dundee's friend (Charlie) says that he isn't going to climb all the way down the cliff to retrieve the guy's clothes. :)

Through a line of protesters blocking a highway?

Cacique Caribe14 Oct 2018 11:03 a.m. PST

LOL. However, I'm afraid that a stampede of panicked big animals wouldn't be stopped by that "obstacle". They would probably go through it like through wet tissue paper.

And big beasts that are running for their lives aren't afraid of pre-positioned (staged) news media and other cameras either. :)

Pits dug by the tribesmen. The animals would break legs, ribs etc. and then the tribesmen can wait for them to die or finish them off with spears etc. Or put stakes in the pits.

Box canyon that can be walled off quickly.

That is the idea… like the scene from Zulu.

Cacique Caribe14 Oct 2018 11:16 a.m. PST

Moonbeast, Bashytubits

So maybe a natural funnel, but with pits and/or stakes waiting for them at the end? That might actually combine both your suggestions.

What about tar pits?

How easy would it be to retrieve the meat and fur afterwards?

Well, I would stampede them through the village/camp, playing hob with the defenses. But I'm a wargamer who's seen too many westerns.

For a hunter, you're looking at a kill zone of some sort, and you may not want the whole herd: just bunch them up to where you can't miss, and shoot as many as you need.

phssthpok14 Oct 2018 12:56 p.m. PST

Mud/marsh. Possibly a river, collect the drowned meat downstream.

Wackmole914 Oct 2018 3:57 p.m. PST

Rock ground will lead to many broken legs

Cacique Caribe14 Oct 2018 4:05 p.m. PST

Wackmole9

Retrieving the meat and fur wouldn't be too much of a problem there.

And rocky ground shouldn't be too hard to make either. In fact not hard at all. Thanks!

Walmart check out lines…..the two that are open of course

Cacique Caribe14 Oct 2018 5:34 p.m. PST

Stampeding through rocky ground like this would break the legs from under any big animal.

There are lots of half hidden boulders in this photo of Greenland.

Down the main street of that pesky town full of townsfolk who are unappreciative of your "protection".

jdpintex14 Oct 2018 6:28 p.m. PST

Prairie dog town. Snapping of legs would get you a fair number

Cacique Caribe14 Oct 2018 7:08 p.m. PST

So true!

You could create a prairie dog town by digging a lot of post holes along a route where you're going to try to drive them.

Some may fall right there and be unable to continue, and you can take those immediately.

Others may have less severe injuries, but will be slowed down. As you follow the stampeding herd, you'll catch up to them, too.

The foregoing assumes a relatively low level of technology. If you have land mines, stampede them into a mine field. If you have to clear a mine field, kill to birds with one stone and stampede them into the mine field that needs to be cleared!

If you have guns, you can stampede them to run past a prepared position where your gunners are waiting.

As I recall, bogs/marshes were used by early hunters. A bit messy to deal with harvesting the meat, but there are areas where a large animal get bogged while a human can still get around.

I have also read of walls built along migration paths to funnel medium sized games such as caribou into a killing zone.

In urban areas, at hippies.

We played a Cowboys vs Dinosaurs game where the objective was to stampede your livestock (herd of cows, herd of sheep) off the board (through a river, around some buttes) without being eaten. So over hill and dale, I guess.

I have some complaints about the Vatican comments, but since they're from Blazing Saddles and not apparently intended as anti-Catholic, we'll allow them.

Lion in the Stars15 Oct 2018 6:55 p.m. PST

Yeah, best bet for hunting purposes would be into a prepared killing zone.

* Off a cliff if you can get down to the bottom easily
* Into a box canyon,
* Into a marsh or river,
* Over a prairie dog town for the thinner-legged critters like horses, sheep, or cattle.

Bill: "I have some complaints about the Vatican comments, but since they're from Blazing Saddles and not apparently intended as anti-Catholic, we'll allow them."

Hmm. Does that mean this will be allowed with movie quotes about other religions and belief systems then?

Into a lake or river and than the hunters pursue in primitive boats as the animals tire?

Very good question …

COL Scott ret16 Oct 2018 9:20 a.m. PST

Clearly not a quote "about other religions and belief systems".

Cacique Caribe16 Oct 2018 9:50 a.m. PST

Well, it can't be that clear to people who might not have watched the film or to people who remember every single reference in it, can it?

Ps. Hmm. Does this mean that we can quote anything from movies now, without being taken literally?
Example: "nuke them from orbit, it's the only way to be sure" (Aliens)

Roderick Robertson Fezian16 Oct 2018 11:58 a.m. PST

Well, I didn't intend them as anti-Catholic.

It's a line from a movie, intended for entertainment purposes only.

Don't necessarily have to; you don't need the whole herd, unless it's those puppies. Damn little meat…

Even a chokepoint can cause slowing and bunching of the critters, and as long as you've got high ground to drop stones from, plenty of dinner after.
