Repeal this: TMP link

As I recall, removing Stifles from a member's profile took several attempts to pass in a poll. And finally the voters "got it right", and they were removed.
Ditto the table listing "most stifled". It's gone too.

I see no reason why "country of residence" is in any way relevant. When the above poll was taken, it only won by 2, and didn't get more than 50%. It's in no way settled.
Let's vote again! Let's "get it right" this time! grin

Winston Smith15 Sep 2018 6:41 a.m. PST

By the way, all my sock puppets and I have decided to lie about our "country of residence", and changed it.
Which shows how useless that piece of data will be.

It was nice to list it for the heck of it. It's the REQUIREMENT that I object to.
By the way, I've noticed that people have been less than truthful about it in the past.

I've always been slightly uneasy about going all the way down to County before. Mainly because of the shenanigans of idiots like Macunaima on Frothers who make a big deal about their macho tech skills in tracking people down. Why make it easier? Finally, I have a reason or two to make that data irrelevant. Not that it does much good, but it's the thought that counts.

Winston, voting time after time until the "right" result is obtained is an EU thing, which I see no reason to import--well, anywhere, actually.

If you can successfully lie about it, enjoy your deceit and be content.

It is just a condition for participating here. You have to give something to get something.

Hey Bill, Don't forget to list Uwanda and Mugabia on the list of nations.

Trying to negate the vote?

PrivateSnafu15 Sep 2018 8:30 a.m. PST

Also include Elbonia.

cosmicbank15 Sep 2018 12:19 p.m. PST

But is lying about your information, a reason to limit you on the website? as you are not "following the rules" I thinke it is a dumb idea to have to list where you are from, I feel it promotes us vs them way of thinking. But lying gives >them a reason to limit "us" as being unreliale as for me I will just say, Bill is being an "Ass" do my DOg house time. And follow the stupid rules, When they become more than I can take I will cease coming to this site.
Thanks
(and this is as serious as I have ever been)

Wasn't the 18th Amendment followed by the 21st? Must be an American thing….

WeeSparky15 Sep 2018 1:07 p.m. PST

I don't know, I find the information kind of handy.

When people ask questions about finding suitable miniatures or terrain building supplies they rarely list their location, so I click on their name to see if sending them to Home Depot or Harbor Freight would be usable advice for them.

sneakgun15 Sep 2018 1:50 p.m. PST

It is helpful in the Marketplace, so I say leave it.

Doug MSC15 Sep 2018 2:00 p.m. PST

I like seeing where people are from. Nothing evil about that unless they want to say mean things and then run and hide.

Personally, I think that getting the right result, rather than the wrong one, has something going for it and checking from time to time is probably the wise thing to do.

I freely gave that information when I signed up, but don't like being told that I MUST disclose my area. That's a personal choice and shouldn't be considered a mandate.

McWong7315 Sep 2018 5:03 p.m. PST

You check what you had to disclose to use your pc or mobile device lately?

Ochoin, there's a serious difference between trying something and admitting it didn't work out, and telling the voters they're just going to have to keep voting until they produce the answer their betters want.

If I were Bill, there wouldn't have been a vote: this isn't a democracy. But now that there's been one and he feels bound by it, I'd say wait a year or two and see how it works out. If it's a mess, I'll vote for repeal then--but not now.

Before I forget, how many TMP members from Wakanda?

You must not have lived in a city/state where a sports franchise was demanding the city/state build them a new stadium or they would move.

Grelber15 Sep 2018 8:01 p.m. PST

I'm with Wee Sparky: When people ask for information, I frequently look to see where they're from to see if I can offer useful advice.

That's fine, IF they wish to volunteer that information.
Making it mandatory is what sticks in my craw.

Nope. Just matters what spin you want to put on something.

Make it optional. I do not like making it mandatory.

deephorse16 Sep 2018 4:10 p.m. PST

It's the mandatory thing that I don't like either. And since when has membership been a privilege? Without membership there is no content. Without content no-one visits. Without visitors there is nothing to attract advertisers. With no advertisers Bill's income surely suffers. We should be thanked for being members, not subjected to mandatory requirements that have no bearing on anything.

When people gripe about saying what COUNTRY they live in, I see them either as troublemakers who just want to complain, or as tinfoil hat-types who see government and secret conspiracies around every corner.

This is an online community of fellow hobbyists, get over yourself and go back to counting your ammunition and freeze-dried food supplies you have prepared for the apocalypse.

Winston Smith17 Sep 2018 2:23 p.m. PST

Nothing paranoid or tin foil hat about it.
For 12 years or more, the OFM listed his true place of residence. As did I.
Then when an ill conceived poll won that REQUIRED it, we both promptly changed it.
Technically we are within the rule. We are simply listing a false place of residence. How are you going to prove that the OFM does NOT live in County Mayo* or that I do not live in the Marshall Islands?
Whose business is it? Nobody's. Just some guys who like to be offended when their place of residence is allegedly insulted, and they want to say, "Well, what do you expect from a Marshall Islander?"
And when or if the requirement is lifted, we just might tell the truth.

Part of being a proud American is that I refuse to be compelled to do things for which there is no reason beyond a busybody compulsion to gather information.

I just want it to be known that I couldn't care less. Well, okay, I cared enough to read this thread and post this response. But beyond that, meh.

And just to add, now you know why a true democracy sucks. Which is also why the US deliberately isn't one.
