Winston Smith | 14 Sep 2018 10:12 p.m. PST |
Fixed. I'm not kowtowing to fake "patriotism". My opinion is just as valid as if I'm from the USA or the Marshall Islands. I've never been there. I hear it's nice. I encourage everyone to lie. And if anyone doesn't like it, report me to Homeland Security. |
Cacique Caribe | 15 Sep 2018 3:55 a.m. PST |
"I'm not kowtowing to fake ‘patriotism'" You lost me. Now I have no idea what the hell you're talking about. But, then again, I don't need to know, nor would it be the first time that disconnect has happened. Anyway, I assume that you got your vote in. And now it's done. Dan |
Winston Smith | 15 Sep 2018 5:26 a.m. PST |
"And now it's done." Not really. More than one "policy" issue has been voted on more than once until we got "the right snswer". Someone will bring this up again. Not me. The OFM and I are now residents of "other", which will change often. I urge others to do the same so fake "analysis" will be foiled. |

I again ask if this will make TMP run afoul of the GDPR? No, because "country of residence" is not personal data. If it was a full address then that would be personal data. |

Interesting: before it became a 'requirement' I assume people either filled it in – with the correct information or simply left it blank. As a requirement it might make people think twice about listing the correct information since the 'why' of it is not defined. |
Cacique Caribe | 15 Sep 2018 1:55 p.m. PST |
Winston/OFM LOL. And you sometimes call ME the paranoid one! Hilarious. Dan PS. Don't worry, the draft police wouldn't be looking for you this late in the game. :) |

Well I'm always interested where people come from. If for no other reason you may be able to understand a bit more about what they post, why, etc. I don't see why it would be a big secret. Unless where they live the gov't may have a problem with the net in general. |
Cacique Caribe | 16 Sep 2018 8:30 a.m. PST |
Legion 4 "If for no other reason you may be able to understand a bit more about what they post, why, etc" Wow, spot on! Dan |
Winston Smith | 16 Sep 2018 9:28 a.m. PST |
What if a "stateless person" tries to post? What will happen? What will happen to all of his previous posts? Will they vanish? What is to force me to state my residence (tellingly not my citizenship…) accurately? Will I be punished if my choice is … innacurate? Or a deliberate lie? This is dumb from the get-go. It's none of your damn business. You want it solely for the smug satisfaction of "knowing where I come from"? What a petty reason. You can understand what I say from what I post. |
Winston Smith | 16 Sep 2018 9:34 a.m. PST |
What's your real motivation Dan? Do you want to assemble a dossier on those who displease you? Do you want all the information you can get together for when The Day comes? |
Cacique Caribe | 16 Sep 2018 9:53 a.m. PST |
Winston/John: "What's your real motivation Dan? Do you want to assemble a dossier on those who displease you? Do you want all the information you can get together for when The Day comes?" Wow, I don't know what the problem is with you and this topic, nor do I really care (I really don't), but you seem a bit more wound up than usual. So I'm not going to add to your sense of paranoia and I'll just let you do and say your thing to those who might care. All the best. Dan PS. Though I do see you have no problem bringing up what others say and even where they post from. Anyway, just an observation for the sake of a little rational perspective, before I move on to other places and things today. |

I'm not sure its necessary, but I don't see the harm either….I've only looked personally so I don't waste time telling someone all about UK stockists when they live elsewhere. I also already had my correct location up since I joined TMP I believe. |
Editor in Chief Bill | 16 Sep 2018 11:23 a.m. PST |
John, you're not even a Basic Member, so not sure why you're getting so upset about this. |
The Virtual Armchair General | 16 Sep 2018 11:37 a.m. PST |
Actually, at the risk of sounding naive to the OFM (whose presence here I greatly enjoy), I don't know why indicating one's country of residence had to become mandatory, but I fail to see the harm in it, and the information can be of some small help to me as a retailer. Quoting postage costs is decidedly location dependent, and not all E-mail addresses are clear on the origin of an order or question. If the customer hangs out at TMP, at least I can independently confirm if he's domestic or overseas. And one of the things I like about TMP is its cosmopolitan nature, and it's nice to know just how much more so if I want to look anyone up. John, Bless You, unless you can tell me something very specific to alter my thinking, it does seem this is an unusually sore point for you, Sir. TVAG |
Bunkermeister | 16 Sep 2018 5:27 p.m. PST |
I am proud to be an American and USA is my home. With a few recent events in Communist China now tracking people and their social score it might be bad to be on TMP. With people in EU countries being threatened with prosecution for posting MEMEs and perhaps in the UK too, I can understand were others might want to avoid posting where they are from. I do like to know where people are from, if English is their second language, or they live in a nation very different from my own it might explain some of their remarks and make communication better. It TMP even available in Communist China? North Korea? Vietnam? Cuba? Zimbabwe? Venezuela? Mike Bunkermeister Creek Bunker Talk blog USA |
Winston Smith | 16 Sep 2018 7:57 p.m. PST |
I too am proud to be an American. (Even if I can't stand that sappy song. ) But why are so many fine with compelling us to say where we are from? It's no hardship to be puzzled about where someone is from. Life goes on, and you will live just as long. Beer will taste just as good, as will bacon and strawberries. The laughter of children will sound just as sweet. If someone is WILLING to click on a drop down to show their place of residence, good on them. And if they can't be bothered, why force them? Is it really any of your business? Compulsion is un-American. If the mandatory part of this is removed, and it goes back to being purely voluntary, I will go right back and proudly click on American. But don't force me. |
David Manley | 16 Sep 2018 9:14 p.m. PST |
Why only basic members? If it's going to be done, is harmless and has benefits it would seem to be something that everyone should do. |
Cacique Caribe | 17 Sep 2018 4:36 a.m. PST |
This really reminds me of back when I was a kid and worked as a bank teller to pay for school. Everyone else except me knew about this old man who threw fits – and I mean fits – every time someone said "Good Morning" to him. I made the mistake of saying it to him, and he let me have it. He went on and on about how I had no right to tell him what sort of morning to have. And that if I was simply stating that the morning had been a good one, that I had no earthly idea how the morning had been for him and I should therefore keep my opinions to myself. I then asked him if it was okay to just say "Hello". He said yes, but that we should do that for EVERY customer as well. LOL. Later on our manager told us to just avoid saying "Good Morning" to any customers … whenever HE was around. Wow, what a guy! Dan PS. My plan was to completely stay away from this thread, but I now see that there's a repeal request of some sort in the poll suggestions: TMP link I missed the last vote on this topic (I would have voted for) but, IF there is another one 7 months from now to overturn this one, I will be voting on that one for sure, for this new rule to stand as t is now. I wouldn't miss it for the world. :) |

I'm not sure its necessary, but I don't see the harm either….I've only looked personally so I don't waste time telling someone all about UK stockists when they live elsewhere. Very true … Plus some "sayings", vernacular, etc. is a bit different from nation to nation or, e.g. in the USA from state to state in some cases. E.g. in the US South to say, "God bless his heart." Generally means he's an idiot basically ! LOL ! But no I don't think it should be mandatory … Do you want to assemble a dossier on those who displease you? Do you want all the information you can get together for when The Day comes? That's Classified … AFAIK "Just because you are paranoid, doesn't mean someone is not out to get you." is harmless and has benefits it would seem to be something that everyone should do. I too believe that … I am proud to be an American and USA is my home. As am I, and I use my real name in my profile. I really have nothing to hide. Of course one can, as some do, use a screen name or false name and location in their profile. That should be and appears to be fine too. Maybe I'll change my location to Area 51 … but that would be Classified then ! I'm now from Afghanistan. Do they even have the internet there !?!?!? |
