Just an update of sorts to the post TMP link started by Cacique Caribe.

I ordered two of the four inch rollers to try out on extruded construction foam. I picked up rollers SD2061 Brick Wall and SD2038 Pine Tree Bark.

From just a few minutes of experimenting, my impression of the tools is extremely favorable. The texture cut into the maple rods is deep enough that it is easy to press into foam. The other thing I really like, is the tapered ends. Unlike the acrylic rod tools designed for texturing bases, it is much easier to do large areas with these and align the textures without having to worry about destroying work with the smooth roller end overlapping previous work.

The textures could be made better for wargamers such as the bricks being smaller, and a texture that is more cobbley (cobble-like, cobblesque?) but the artist advertises doing custom texture rollers, so it should be possible.

Wow, good job there!

What are you going to make with the sheets now?

I think I will try the pine tree bark for rough stone streets in both Frostgrave and Gangs of Rome. Should look good if I pretexture the foam by rolling an aluminum ball around on it first.

The bricks are a little big to use as bricks, but should make decent cinder block building walls. I'm not currently working on any modern terrain though.

Just thought of something …

That bark texture could also work as some sort of "cooled" lava field, if painted right:
