To help convey the insectoid feel of the craft, I've added something to the lid portion which could be compared to the spirules (breathing "valves") found on the sides of most bugs. They also look a bit like barnacles:

What their function is to the ship is still a mystery. They might be part of the sensory systems to help gather all sorts of data. Or perhaps it's for propulsion or communication. Or they could be some sort of symbiotic organism that provides other vital services to the ship. The possibilities are many.

By the way, don't mind the color pins along the edge. They are simply there to keep the lid from shifting at the moment. And there's a layer of trimmed parchment paper between the lid and the body of the craft to keep the two sections of the ship from sticking to each other while I finish the lid.

The little flat-headed pins will be left there to help the clay or putty adhere better to the lip of the lid. That is the next step of the project, and I'm still trying to decide which of my fillers to use for that. It will probably end up being the DAP lightweight spackle I already have. It would have to be something sandable and not prone to cracking or crumbling when handled.

Anyway, after you've had a chance to look at the photos, please let me know what you think of the overall look of the ship so far.

Thanks so much!

Dan

Really looking forward to what you do for paintjob; the 'lid' actually reduced the kewlness. ;->=

That interior…!

You don't like the ‘lid'? :(

The interior was definitely fun to carve out:

Dan,

You probably thought of this already, but to secure the top(lid) to the bottom you might try magnets. Other than that suggestion I am very, very impressed.

Dave

PS: When you get the Queen ship done you need to make a bunch of smaller drone ships to protect her. That will keep you off the streets and out of bars for a while. grin

"That will keep you off the streets and out of bars for a while"

Ha! I can barely remember those days. :)

Dan
PS. It already has magnets. The pins are temporary, while I extend the edge of the lid.

I can't wait to see this thing landing way back in the woods, behind the trailer park! Lil Timmy saw it landing, tried to warn everybody but no body believes him! evil grin

Cacique Caribe20 Jul 2018 12:41 p.m. PST

Thanks!!!

Well I think I've now got the right mix of lightweight spackle, wood filler and air dry clay. It's what I had on hand, and I didn't want to wait any longer, as it was holding up the rest of the project. It was a pain for me to mix the stuff, but I finally got it to the right consistency.

So I'll get the edge of the lid extended later tonight, and I'll make sure to give it a couple of days to dry thoroughly before trying to sand it. Fingers crossed.

I'll keep you guys posted.

Dan
PS. So no one believes little Timmy, huh? Soon they'll wish they had. :)

You don't like the ‘lid'? :(

Just saying, 'til painted, 'lid' can't match the structure seen inside. Course, you could ruin that interior with bad paint instead… *lol*

Dan, you KNOW I'm teasing; all looks awesome!

Doug (TheBeast)

And you gotta know I'M teasing too, right?

Besides, my wife now calls it my wedding cake project. She used to call it my dinosaur egg project until I put the beads on the lid. What can I say, she loves to push my buttons. :)

Any progress and updates on your project?

Cacique Caribe29 Jul 2018 10:06 a.m. PST

Doug

I worked on the edge of the lid but, unfortunately, it didn't end up working too well. So I had to remove much of it and try a different material.

I'm going to wait one more day before trying to separate the lid from the body, to see if I was successful this time. If so, I'll start the carving and sanding later this week. I'll definitely take and share pictures.

Fingers crossed.
