Hi: I've got a series of lend-lease British Shermans I'm painting up for Market Garden, and I want them to have the "Irish Guards" markings. I've noticed in the FoW books and various resources online that in addition to the colored geometric (in this case, blue) troop markings, the guards (Irish and otherwise) often filled the shape in with black and applied a white numeral to represent the squadron (I've even seen leaders displaying "HQ" there). Problem is, I can find zero decals online that show this. All of the troop markings on pretty much every British WW2 tank decal sheet I can find just have the outlined shape. I'm wondering if anyone here knows of a 15mm decal set I've missed that shows the full marking, with fill-in color and squadron numbers? If not, any ideas on how I could do this? I don't just want to "paint it in," as I fear I'll make brush strokes, and I want the numerals to not look "painted on," if you will. Any ideas? |

Start with Dom's Decals and you'll be done. He has the insignia, formation symbols and the numbers. link |

See if you can contact Dom before you place an order. He's a great bloke but to say he has had some recent issues would be an understatement. Check the PSC Guards Armoured decal sheet otherwise could you not paint in the black and then use a small decal or stencil for the white number? |

Wyatt. I have ordered from Dom in the past, to include for my Guards armored, but unless I missed something his decals dont solve MightyPen2017's problem. Dom's tactical markings, like most others, it just the outline. The PSC set also only has the outlined tactical markings. I ended up painting in the centers of the symbols for my Irish Guards. Mustang Game Systems used to do a set with the interior colored in (don't remember if they had the number in the center) but, sadly, they are now gone TMP link |

Thanks for all the feedback, guys! Yes, I know I could just "fill in" the outline with black paint, but I'm not wild about painting over the smooth, glossy decal like that -- I'm sure it will be difficult to stay in the lines, never mind adding a number decal on top! My only hope, it seems, are the decals produced by Battlefront, labeled "BR944 – Irish Guards." The problem is, that decal sheet only appears to be a part of the British "Sherman Armoured Platoon." I can't seem to find the decal sheet on its own anywhere. |

MightyPen – Create a mask for the filled area and then place the decal over the painted shape to outline it. Wyatt |

Sheesh, all these years I've been painting figures and vehicles in other scales, why didn't I think to mask it? That might work, though it means I'll probably want to stick to square or triangle-shaped markings, as circles would be a lot harder for me to do. Thanks for the suggestions to everyone! |

Actually circles can be the easiest! For drafting they make a template with various size circles cut out. Cover the hole you want (and some of the surrounding area) with masking tape. Use a newish #11 blade to cut the center out. Peel off the tape and instant mask! |

FOW Decals for Late War British Sherman's but only come in the box set. But you do get enough decals to number 18 tanks as you get 4 pairs of 1's, 2's, 3's, 4's, and 2 pairs of HQ decals these are the blue squares filled in with black and white lettering, I just noticed being redundant. |
