Here is the initial idea:

And this is what the first stage of the project looks like:

Okay, the shape was easy, a flat hollow "pear". Basically, a flatter version of the Tin Man organic spacecraft in Star Trek TNG. The pointy end will be the rear of the ship though:

The hardest thing was settling on a size, but here it is:

Well, I made some cardboard templates, the largest of which is 10.5 inches long by 8.25 inches wide. The height will probably end up being something like 2.5 inches or so. Right now it is about 2 inches thick.

Then, with the templates pinned between sheets of foam*, I used a hot wire cutter to start the shape.

Next part is the sanding. After that, I will hollow out the interior and then glue the layers in the proper place (without the cardboard templates in between). That's going to have to wait until after this week. I have an MRI tomorrow and follow ups later this week.

Thoughts on the progress so far?

Dan
* I had a bunch of old "CellFoam 88" sheets that my wife has been bugging me (pardon the pun) to get rid of. Well … she didn't exactly say how to get rid of them, right? :)

Thanks. It's only the first step though. There's a lot more to come.

Yeah, we got that; some of us need encouragement to even start, or, at least, get past same. ;->=

You, on the other hand, can be counted on to do something awesome. I'm with Gokiburi.

Ok, I went ahead and used a wire cutting board to hollow out the interior of my Ootheca husk ship:

So this concludes PART ONE. I have some medical appointments in the next few days, so this is a good stopping point.

Thoughts?
