A look at the Matchbox Arctic "rovers" at Walmart made me wonder … A) How soon before the Antarctic is fought over? Ten years? Fifty? A hundred years? B) What sort of military forces would be deployed? C) Could this be a suitable 15mm gaming scenario? What Figures? What vehicles? D) Got any good terrain ideas? What would military stations/bases look like in Antarctica? Dan link link link link link

CC, There been wars with the five factions over the Antartic for near four decades now. ;-) Grimm |

I've picked up a few of those Matchbox snow vehicles just in case I need them at some future point. |

I thought Khurasan made some 15mm troops in Arctic gear, but I can't find them now. There is the old 25mm not Ice Station Zebra range that I believe is currently out of production. |

I wonder how many women have given birth to Antarcticans (sp?). Do they have pale blue skin like the Andorians in Star Trek? Anyone know? :) Dan |
ROUWetPatchBehindTheSofa | 01 Jun 2018 10:46 a.m. PST |
I think Argentina and Chile have shipped pregnant women to give birth on the continent… I assume because they believe it gives weight to their territorial claims! No idea on numbers. |
Cacique Caribe | 01 Jun 2018 12:27 p.m. PST |
If that's true then I don't think they were the first to do so. Dan |

Australia owns most of the Antarctic and have stocked their territory with killer drop bears. No one else need apply. |

Factions in Antartica…??? |

Each penguin species is a faction, I guess. Dan PS. And we could also include 19 potential factions of polar bears! TMP link |

I used to love playing that old SPI game, "War in the Ice". What a great idea Dan! |
Cacique Caribe | 02 Jun 2018 8:18 a.m. PST |
Tony Glad you like the idea. Was "War in the Ice" based on the "Ice Station Zebra" scenario? Dan |
Lion in the Stars | 03 Jun 2018 3:47 a.m. PST |
Khurasan's cold-weather guys can be found in the 'Planet 15' range. |
Legion 4 | 03 Jun 2018 7:14 a.m. PST |
Didn't Steve Jackson do an Artic future war game ? I have the small "pocket size" game in my "archives" somewhere … It was pretty good. Similar to the ORGE game in that format, IIRC … |

WHAT IF … the world powers are all rushing to Antarctica because of what happened at "Outpost 31"? TMP link Dan PS. Or would they nuke the entire site from orbit, just to be sure? |

Thanks for the link to the boardgamegeek page Dan. I maxed out the map there. It's great and could be used for the whole campaign I think. |

Would we see equipment like this (ZTD-05 amphibious assault vehicle) or would we see more air assets?

Already looking for 15mm-ish matchbox vehicles now.
|
Cacique Caribe | 04 Jun 2018 4:27 p.m. PST |
I've acquired a handful of Matchbox vehicles these last few years, specifically for future Antarctica scenarios or on some frozen world somewhere. Okay, more than a handful. Maybe a dozen by now. :) Dan PS. Taishan would definitely be an interesting terrain project, if someone was planning on making it. Not only is it an interesting shape, it is also close to the Norwegian base from the movie The Thing. :)

Lion in the Stars | 05 Jun 2018 3:43 p.m. PST |
Dear lord, is that a Chinare C-47? |
Hey You | 05 Jun 2018 5:43 p.m. PST |
So more vehicle pics:
I don't think hardcore military assets would be employed but maybe conversions of the civilian type vehicles such as the ones above. A bunch of pics are also at chinare.cn/tj/tj-1.htm I am not meaning to point out just the Chinese. I think all countries have an chance to be involved in the fictitious war. I just started thinking about how to get 15mm Chinese vehicles. I think I would also like to follow up with the Norwegians next. One catalyst could be the James Arness creature (I need a 1 inch figure for him). Maybe the ship wasn't destroyed. News would spread and then all the nearby nation-state actors would move on securing the assets for scientific reasons (yeah scientific, that's right). It might not be friendly research either. And there maybe be one-off partnerships between countries that don't normally get along. |

When it doubt … get aliens involved somehow … |
Hey You | 06 Jun 2018 11:15 a.m. PST |
It's doesn't have to involve aliens, but I do have alien stuff in 15mm.(smile). We could also take a section from the Ice Station Zebra playbook and have a spy satellite (sorry atmospheric research satellite) fall somewhere on the ice near several claimed zones. But all the players would have to be polite and call each other "Sir" and maintain civility while they figure out how to get to said satellite. |
Cacique Caribe | 06 Jun 2018 4:57 p.m. PST |
Legion: "When it doubt … get aliens involved somehow …" Perhaps saurians returning home, perhaps to their holiest sites in Antarctica. I seriously doubt that they'll like the change in scenery ("furry mammals" now rule the planet) and their home continent is now almost entirely covered in ice. :) Dan |

The Book, "Thunder Of Erebus" is a about a war between the US and Russia in the Antarctic |
Cacique Caribe | 05 Aug 2018 5:57 p.m. PST |
Lookingglassman While one book summary speaks of a joint mission of the US and the post-Soviet Russian Federation, this reviewer seems to think that Russia is still Soviet*. link So which Russian were they in the book? Cold War Russian Commies or post-Communist Russians? The latter is slightly believable, while the former would have been a completely fantasy setting. : ) Dan * Perhaps the review was written by one of those college kids who are being made to believe that Russia is still Soviet (and still our greatest enemy) and that China is now Capitalist (and suddenly our greatest friend). |
