Everyone likes polar bears these days it seems, and want to do anything to help them out. So … WHAT IF dozens or hundreds of polar bears were relocated to the southern continent? What could possibly go wrong? :) Dan PS. One good thing that could come out of it is that all the cartoons and memes with both penguins and polar bears will finally be accurate. The two animals will finally get to meet!

Nice idea, but no taxpayer dollars! Let someone who wins a billion dollars in Powerball foot the bill. |

Just a historical note, but the original 'Penguin' was also known as the Great Auk, a Northern Hemisphere sea bird which could have encountered Polar Bears gastronomically. |

Shouldn't be hard to do: Fence off a portion of a glacier. Use snow mobiles to herd them onto the glacier. Dynamite behind them to free the glacier and create a really big ice berg. Tow the ice berg to Antarctica. Use a few cruise ships to do the towing. Sell tickets for the Polar Bear Salvation Cruise! to fund the enterprise. umm…Excuse me, I need to speak with my accountant. |

Not sure how well that might end for the penguins….. |

Remember the Polar Bears are dying for a cause, So They can't be moved. The Penguins are already on the menu for for many Predators, So they don't need anymore. |

" Well there goes the neighborhood ! " As a side bar, my alma mater's mascot is a Penguin … what a penguin has to do with NE OHIO, I'll never know ? Or why he is called "Pete" ?

Wouldn't it be easier to just hacksaw the legs from under Antarctica and then tow it up to where the polar bears are? You may need to tip it up on end to get it through the bottleneck east of Iceland. Shouldn't be too hard. |

No, We park it in the middle of the Atlantic and call it Atlantis. We'll make Trillions on land sales. |

I was just up in Alaska talking to naturalists there and they say that unfortunately, world wide, Polar Bears are the one bear species that we have the least amount of info on. Some subspecies are in decline, while other subspecies are increasing (I had no idea there were subspecies to Polar Bears), but the problem is that they live in such remote areas that we just don't have the data we need to make real judgements on their true situation. The naturalists I talked to felt that the claims on Polar Bear populations made one way or the other are hyperbole since the real data is unknown except in very limited circumstances. |

TGerritsen Polar bears splintered from brown bears about 150,000 years ago, but their ranges occasionally overlap and they have bred with each other naturally. Local tales of such intermixing were ignored for ages until scientist finally had a body to play with a few years ago. So I don't quite know about all the "subspecies" of polar bears they spoke of. Maybe it helps the drama? Dan |

Cacique wrote; "Polar bears splintered from brown bears about 150,000 years ago…" You say that like it's an accepted fact. They actually splintered on day 6 of creation. And day 6 was not all that long ago. |

Penguins are Welsh RittervonBek- who knew? |

Well, for instance there are several subspecies of Brown Bear (Coastal, Kodiak, Grizzly, Mexican Grizzly and California Grizzly- the latter of which is now extinct) and while Polar Bears split off from Brown Bears, they are considered a fully separate species now. I may have mis-spoke, since, after doing a little looking, it appears that there are 19 sub-populations of Polar bear and there is debate on whether or not some are distinct enough to be subspecies. |
Cacique Caribe | 01 Jun 2018 2:10 p.m. PST |
Hmm. I wonder if the Inuit have 19 different names for polar bear, one for each "sub-species". :) They might have a couple, of course, one of which could the equivalent to the phrase "paddle like hell and don't look back!" Dan |

Would bi- polar bears want to both leave the Arctic and also stay? |
Stryderg | 01 Jun 2018 5:12 p.m. PST |
Bye-polar bears are the ones that stay on shore and wave to the ones on the ice floes. I wonder if that's one of the 19 sub species? |
ochoin | 01 Jun 2018 9:24 p.m. PST |

Antarctica is far too cold. In the Arctic the bears can move when it gets cold, to follow their prey. Despite the hoopla, polar bears are not going to die off because it warms a bit. If they are struggling it will be because fishing reduces seal numbers. That's even assuming they are struggling. As others have pointed out, we know little about their numbers. |
Legion 4 | 02 Jun 2018 7:57 a.m. PST |
