"The Royal Navy scrambled a warship to shadow a Chinese flotilla as it steamed through the English Channel en route to meet Russian vessels for manoeuvres in the Baltic Sea.

The trio of Chinese warships passed through the Strait of Dover under the watch of the HMS Richmond, a Type 23 frigate, at the weekend.

They then headed across the North Sea, where they were spotted being escorted by Dutch vessels earlier this week ahead of manoeuvres with Vladimir Putin's navy which begin on Friday…"

Ten years ago the Chinese Communist government thought it possible, and that's why they can do it now. Projecting power from Asia to Europe. Unprecedented, I think.

That's the real problem right there. The problem is the West constantly underestimating their resolve.

I guess China is preparing for its own "lebensraum" period in the eventual future?

PS. Both the US and Russia are training China for that operation:

The European powers once sailed warships in Chinese waters; maybe they are just returning the favor.

Hmm. I wonder if they made a stop at the PRC naval base in Namibia before moving on up to the North Atlantic.

If so, the Brits should have spotted that activity there and along the way north and not been caught off guard when they discovered the Chinese navy in the English Channel.

Thought the Channel was international waters, if uncomfortably close to modern warship weapons ranges…

In other words, 'so what?'

The shocker shouldn't be that Chinese ships transited the Channel, it's international waters and therefore free passage to EVERYONE, warship or merchant, friend or foe. The shocker *should* be that the RN was apparently unaware of their approach.

Exactly.

Where does it say that the RN was unaware of their presence?
