I seem to remember years ago seeing Fantasy/SF games played with pictures of characters drawn as if seen from above.

What is the official name for that POV?

I always called it "top down" and that is the search term I use for Google.

in drafting its called "top view"…in architecture/facility engineering its called "plan view"

Thanks guys! Seems like "top down" is indeed the more commonly used term for what I was talking about:

The Napoleonic stuff was something that I started but abandoned due to the difficulties of implementing cavalry or artillery units as blocks.
