Gents,

I've posted an update to The Abyssinian Crisis webblog. It adds usable rules for the game system Flames of War.

See the post for details.

Cheers

Awesome site! Thanks! But the link to the FOW supplement said you need permission, etc, etc. Do you have a DIRECT link for low tech and lazy knuckleheads like me? lol. Thanks again! I am literally in the process of painting up my 1/300 Ethiopian Army as we speak.

Thanks Jason,

I must have used the wrong google drive link. I've made it 'sharing' now so should be OK now.

Please report back if it works!

Cheers

Very nice…and yes, they would indeed be perfect. Flames of War would work for 15mm as per the TAC post that just went up…good timing!

Whilst those EWM 20mm figures have the Ethiopians available in 15mm they might be harder to find, though proxies would probably be usable…it's not a scale I have used.

This thread discussed it…

…but some new 15mm Eureka sculpts would be nice to complement their new Italians I would think…hint, hint ;-)

The larger battles offer up some interesting games when you take a look at the FoW lists as a guide to this level of action. The armies look quite different and interesting.

…I hope someone picks up the mantle and runs with it as it'd be interesting to see.

I'm doing homebrew FOW lists for the WW2 East Africa campaign and was one of those that got Eureka to make the range.

It was hard enough to get Eureka to make the ascari. Unless they sell well I don't expect any more figures for the range unless the sculpting etc is paid for as private commission.

My first order of 15mm Italian Askaris and Dubats from Eureka have arrived and they are very nice. Well worth the wait for the 300 club – first rate sculpts! I need to add them to the paint que now.

They go great with Eureka's 15mm Abyssinians and Italian Bersaglieri. You can also use the Eureka 15mm WW1 Serbians for the Abyssinian guard troops.

Now I just need to decide if I am going to file all those feathers off of Eureka's Bersaglieri to create regular army and CCNN/MVSN/Blackshirt troops…?

Those troops will ist certainly fir for The Abyssinian Crisis Italians…nice one.

I think TAC using Flames of War would give quite good games as you bring in more support element at a higher level force combination representation ie company level.

I am literally in the process of painting up my 1/300 Ethiopian Army as we speak.

JasonA:
Speak more, man, speak more!

What are you using for your various 1/300 scale Ethiopian combatants?

I do not have a specific interest in Ethiopia, but I am quite interested in various African forces in the early/mid WW2 period.

Selections so far:

- GHQ Romanian Individual Infantry serve as my French Armee d'Afrique forces. The somewhat oversized modelling of the Romanian helmets makes them a useful proxie for the French tropical helmet, and most of the rest of the equipment matches well enough (rifles, LMGs). I've even re-purposed one of the SG-43 MGs provided in the GHQ pack to be a French 37mm M1917 trench gun (not sure why GHQ chose to give their Romanians captured Russian MGs in the first place).

- Bought some H&R Cossack cavalry with the intention of re-purposing them into Spahi cavalry. But I have not done the kit-bashing yet, and the more pics I find, the more I wonder if I might just be better off getting Baccus 6mm WW1 French Cavalry (seems some pics of Spahi's mounted in combat zones show them in Adrian helmets).

- French R35 tanks (GHQ) and R1 tanks (Scotia), and AMD White-Laffley model 50 Armored cars (H&R).

- Italian infantry (GHQ).

- Could really use some Italian infantry in sun helmets, or some Bersaglieri infantry with motorcycles. Not found yet.

- Italian L3 tankettes (GHQ) of course!

A broad cross-section of small quantities of a wide variety of trucks for both the French and Italians. My belief is that most desert forces were a mish-mash of what was available, so non-uniformity in transport is a deliberate goal.

Now considering adding:

- Baccus Colonial Egyptians as both/either French Senegalese Tiraileurs or Italian Askaris. (But what about the support weapons? Even LMGs?)

- Baccus Colonial Mahdist Camelry and Mahdist riflemen as French Meheristi camel troops. (Again what about the support weapons?)

- Somebody's (GHQ or another vendor) Afrika Korps infantry to re-purpose as French Foriegn Legion troops (the German desert cap being closest to a French Kepi I can find … gonna take a bit of work to make convincing LMGs though).

I am very interested in what figures / manufacturers you have chosen to build your forces, and or any ideas you have.
