What you all tell me about Italian Wars native French Infantry, concerning effectiveness, organization, dress, ect? From what I can gather, they seem to be almost wholly crossbowmen, with some small units of pike. Other than that, all I can really glean from the sources I have is that they sucked. Badly.

Seriously, native French Troops seem to have been everybody's punching bag in this period. Does this basic description fit, or is there an alternative position? Also, if they were such incompetent buffoons, why were they used at all by the French kings? Judging from the material that even bothers to mention native French troops, one would think they weren't worth the ducats used to pay them.
