You've seen it many times. Someone clicks on a topic they have no interest in. They complain about it being on TMP. Any ideas why they do this?

Martin Rapier18 Aug 2016 7:20 a.m. PST

Sometimes it isn't obvious what a topic is about.

Some people like to complain.

Sometimes both.

Same reason people click on "12 Ways to Kill a Gerbil With a Melon. Number 5 Blew My Mind!"

You never know if the bug was hiding a good post.

Martin Rapier: +1

USAFpilot18 Aug 2016 7:46 a.m. PST

It's personality driven, or psychological. Some people think they know best and want to enlighten us unwashed masses or they just like to complain. :-)

daler240D18 Aug 2016 7:46 a.m. PST

people notoriously do not know how to fill in the topic line or just don't care to.

Hafen von Schlockenberg18 Aug 2016 7:55 a.m. PST

Now I feel guilty:

TMP link

I will try and improve.

It seems they do have an interest of sorts.

I also gree with most of the comments made.

Now, do we really need silly posts like this?

thorr66618 Aug 2016 8:09 a.m. PST

Gluttons for punishment?

Zargon18 Aug 2016 8:13 a.m. PST

Heck! I clicked on this one, now I'm off to complain.

Total lack of self-control……….

Cerdic18 Aug 2016 8:35 a.m. PST

I often click on topics I have no interest in. This is usually because I don't know if I am interested until I read the first post!

I never complain about it existing, though. I'm sure someone will be interested.

Cerdic18 Aug 2016 8:37 a.m. PST

Oh, yeah…..I can only think of seven ways to kill a gerbil with a melon. What are the others….?

Chokidar18 Aug 2016 8:49 a.m. PST

Come to think of it, we do not seem to have had any good old grammatical pedantry for some time! Tracking down the loose infinitive or some such is always a reason to click on everything – thought provoked when I noticed a very common grammatical mistake in one of the above posts – but I ain't sayin' which!
:-)

Chokidar18 Aug 2016 8:50 a.m. PST

Cerdic, ask Richard Gere….

GarrisonMiniatures18 Aug 2016 9:01 a.m. PST

I have no interest in this topic so why is everyone wasting my time by posting it.

GarrisonMiniatures18 Aug 2016 9:02 a.m. PST

Do the methods of killing gerbils with a melon work with hamsters?

advocate18 Aug 2016 9:13 a.m. PST

Only ten of them.

Norman D Landings18 Aug 2016 9:15 a.m. PST

Depends if you use the hamster to replace the gerbil, or the melon.

(Leftee)18 Aug 2016 9:27 a.m. PST

If you tie the hamster to the melon then you can possibly accomplish both.

GarrisonMiniatures18 Aug 2016 9:27 a.m. PST

Hamsters can be a serious agricultural pest. It is really important that we have reliable methods to control them.

Which 2 ways don't work?

Brian Bronson18 Aug 2016 9:34 a.m. PST

Nervous tic.

I'm scrolling along with no intention of clicking on the Gerbil-Melon link and just when the mouse is over the link, my finger twitches. Then the screen is all, like, "GAAAAaaaaaahhhh!" and my mind is all, like "Ewwwwwwww!" Then I have to get the brain bleach…calm down my pet hamster…hit myself in the head with a melon a few times…Everything's all higgledy-piggledy.

GarrisonMiniatures18 Aug 2016 9:42 a.m. PST

Strange fact:

My 'Hamsters can be a serious agricultural pest.' quote is true…

Many years ago I worked for a company which had a subsidiary that made rat and mouse poisons. One time they got a query from a farmer in Kent -'do you have anything that works on hamsters?'

Seems people were releasing pet hamsters in the countryside and the things were breeding – and farmers found that traditional poisons didn't work very well…

Private Matter18 Aug 2016 10:25 a.m. PST

I often click on topics I have no interest in because the conference call I happen to be on is droning on and on in repetitive boredom and I've already read through all the posts in which I am interested. (Such as now) Although I don't complain but I sometimes will question.

(Leftee)18 Aug 2016 12:54 p.m. PST

Not surprising. Gerbils are thought to have been main carrier of black death not the so much the black rat.
As an aside while we're on pesky rodents, rabbits don't get TB, not in understand, but suffer from.

The Beast Rampant18 Aug 2016 12:58 p.m. PST

I have no idea why they click on it. It's probably the same reason they click on a topic and chime in to tell everyone they have no opinion on it. Like we were all just DYING to know that.

Personal logo Herkybird Supporting Member of TMP18 Aug 2016 1:00 p.m. PST

Because they want to?

ArmymenRGreat18 Aug 2016 1:34 p.m. PST

I suspect it's related to the defect that causes people to answer Amazon.com product questions with "Sorry, I don't know the answer to your question."

Berzerker7318 Aug 2016 6:56 p.m. PST

jhancock18 Aug 2016 7:21 p.m. PST

What is the punchline?

Curiosity?

Hello All,
Seeing as I am probably the cause of this post (although not exclusively), I think I'd better try and explain how I feel.

1. The site is called 'The Miniatures Page', perhaps it should more accurately be renamed ' The Miniatures, and Anything Else Which Takes Your Fancy Page.

2. As others have said, titles of posts aren't always accurate.

3. I enjoy The Miniatures Page, It has great content related to the hobby, be it wargaming, painting, modelling or just collecting. It's great for ideas, hints and tips and gleaning useful information from clever people and hard to find sources.

4. I find it frustrating that I can't filter out most of the non-wargaming/miniatures posts which don't interest me, because they appear on a diverse number of boards, some of which contain other useful information, and sometimes essential information, such as messages from Bill about site rules et al
.
5.. Just my personal opinion, but I think they detract from my overall enjoyment of The Miniatures Page. This, from your response, is not the opinion of most of the other members (so be it) They way I see it, the number of unrelated posts pushes the other posts down the page, scrolling them off the other end too fast.

6. Perhaps the said posts could have their own board, a 'Non Hobby Related' board, so that I, and people of a like mind (there are some, I know), could then filter them out. (possibly a Poll for this Bill).

7. I've made my point now, I think. That many of you don't agree with me is obvious, so I will now desist from making comments on such posts (except this one), unless I have something to contribute.

8. As an afterthought, perhaps posters in the 'for sale/wanted section' could possibly give an indication of where they are prepared to sell their items. I've lost count of the number of adds I've opened, only to be told 'sorry, you can't buy this'. All it would require is an abbreviated notation in brackets in the title of the post such as (US), (L48), (UK), (EUR), (WW-for world wide).

Thanks for your time in reading this.
regards
Paul F

It is often the writer's fault by using an "intriguing" headline in order to get more attention. Thus they get more attention.

Because, if l scan over the Napoleonics page, and there's a topic with over 100 replies in a short space of time, you can put money on the fact Gazzola and Brech are up to their antics again. Settle down, make yourself a coffee, get a beer, and enjoy! The title is irrevalant!

No sir, not you, and you bring up lots of good points I can agree with. This is a TMP tradition that everyone is guilty of, me included.

What if someone clicked on this topic without being interested in why they clicked on a topic that wasn't interesting to them? INCEPTION :)
