I call it a lead mountain – probably a small knoll by comparison with some of you chaps. Started the day out wondering how many cavalry regiments I had in the cupboard to paint. It went downhill from there.

Do you ever inventory what you have unpainted or is it too frightening a prospect?

I know I have a British Peninsular Army now, but why did I buy Hinchliffe Scots decades ago?

I try to stick to one project at a time, with rough figures to either do two starter armies and then enough to round them out. That discipline has held for a long time, but recently collapsed.

I now have too much in the queue, so will work to bring it back under control.

I am in a purchase free period. Which isn't really purchase free, but heavily reduced.

The mountain is huge and I think it will keep me going for many a year yet.

Good luck with this lot Brian.

I have over many years tried to keep an inventory (I'm sure there are more figures in the loft that I have missed) and have tried to keep track of projects and progress through "The Pledge" here on TMP – a Monthly update on progress that started in 2005!!!!

I sadly suffer from the "ooo New and Shiny" compulsive condition!!!!!

I start the year off highly motivated and organised and it goes downhill form there

Last months update

I have tried the 1 project at a time but find it overwhelming at times so have gone back to doing units per month – currently got 28mm Arabs, 28mm WWII French and 6mm mahdists on my painting table

I'm in process of the cull the herd plan. Too much lead/plastic & too little time/will to paint them.

I do inventory from time-to-time but mine isn't too bad. If it is more than I could paint if I were to take a fortnight off work to do, I sell/donate the excess.

I am too much of a hoarder to do that. I still have the first Hincliffe metals I brought in 1977. Some of them are still unpainted.

What is it I have heard people say?, "You can't die if you have unpainted figures".
I think you are just getting ready for a comfortable and busy old age. As for the Scots, An old school battalion of Highlanders would look really cool.

I'm looking for three Old Glory 28mm Lauzun's Legion cavalry from their AWI range to bring an existing unit up to 12 figures.

I inventoried all my unpainted figures about 20 years ago, and spent the rest of the month being totally depressed Haven't done it since.

On the other hand, I have kept records of how any figures I bought and painted for the past 40 years, and more recently added in figures sold, so I could probably get some idea of how many figures I have unpainted (if I wanted). I have also done a couple "Purchase free" years, or moratoriums, which are actually major cutbacks in number of figures bought.

Oh good God no.

I have so many unpainted figures sitting around, it's sad. Really need to just up and send some off to Sri Lanka or wherever to be tarted up.

We should all do inventories in case our houses burn down and our figures melt and we have to file insurance claims. That actually happened to a client of mine.

I came to the conclusion sometime last year that I needed to get things accomplished. I have three huge plastic bins of minis as well as what was a growing pile next to my desk.
I decided I needed to do something about it. I found a stateside painter (one I don't have to explain everything too) who is affordable and I started sending him all my SYW stuff.I have heavily curtailed my purchases even though I do fall victim to some(like the Essex Byzantine Army and TTG Ptolemaic armies I recently bought). I buy only what I need for projects I am working on, such as my SYW project and my MAW one, along with a few side skirmish projects. Last year by this time, and probably the prior year as well, I had bought around 1500 figures ending both years with about 2500. This year its a fraction of that and I am feeling much better about what I have and what is getting done. Now I just need more time to base…lol

Relatively little. 50 foot and 12 cavalry, two guns, some odd figures and about 30 – 40 planes of various types.

Because the primer I use is nasty I can't use it inside and it only really works on warm days. I had planned to build up a little pile to see me through the winter months when I can't prime. With the better weather I'd rather be outside than inside painting figures and the reality is that I probably have enough in stock to see me through the next winter. If I run out I can always build up a pile of conversions or finish the buildings I'm making.

If I have time to inventory I have time to paint.

Brian Smaller15 May 2016 1:13 p.m. PST

@Flashman – that is the attitude!
