My initial attempt ending up hijacking a fantasy thread. Quite embarrassing.

Anyway:

So, I've been doing the el-cheapo route to get a significant number of ACW troops on the table, and I've run into a wee bit of a problem.

Like most other era's plastic 1/72 sets, the ACW ones are missing enough of "specialist" figures (officers, guidons, musicians, etc) to make assembling forces kind of a pain in the behind. Buying 9 whole boxes of figs for 9 flag bearers seems….stupid?

So the question is, what metal range fits in with these figs to fill in the gap without having several hundred figs left over?

TIA for your thoughts.

Until the experts arrive, you could try some of these:

Musket Miniatures sold a 22mm line of figures that fit perfectly. Unfortunately, the line sold recently, and I do not think they are available right now.

I've swapped out a rifleman for a flag bearer. It's not a very hard conversion. Some cutting and drilling.

Officers and musicians are another matter.

Some real good info on the link above.

JT8, I've got a bunch of painted ESCI ACW guys & a bunch of Musket Miniatures metal guys, Officers, flag bearers, dead, and such. I'm gonna take em to H-Con, to the Flea Mkt. PM me & maybe we can work something out…

I typically just do conversions. For example the Imex Union Infantry has a figure standing with his rifle at his side ( look at Imex set on the plastic soldier review, the figure is second from the left on the second row ( link ) . I usually just cut out the gun and glue in a piece of wire for the flag staff. You get six of those figures in a box so that gives you a good number of flag bearers.

Musicians may be a bit harder to convert. In my personal opinion since there were very few musicians in a regiment I usually don't care if they are represented or not.

Welcome to the addictive world of 1/72 plastics. As posted previously, the IMEX figure is an easy conversion so you can get two flag bearers per Union regiment. The kneeling flag guy s*cks. For mounted officers I went with 25mm metal. Close enough and they were sometimes "larger than life" ;)

Anyway; have a look at Irregular's (metal) 20mm range for ACW, keen prices and they sell them individually; do PayPal. I've always found them first rate to deal with here in the UK.

Kennington, Newline, Sgts Mess, to name a few.

Also consider Historifigs (nee Scruby). The "25mm" figures are actually closer to 1/72 in size.

Tumbling Dice's ACW range is top notch. They're slightly chunkier, but at a couple of feet away, it's not very noticeable.
