I am looking at working on an ACW project and am a recent 20mm scale convert. I intend to start with some Italeri Confederates I had about the house and intend to use Italeri and Imex where I can for cavalry and artillery. What metal ranges mix well with these brands? I am specifically looking for "Command stand" figures like Officers, musicians, and standard bearers. Options in the Continental US would be preferable for reasons of economy.

Does anyone still make the old K&L (I believe that was their name) figures?

Nice line of 20 mm figures with pins for swords and standard poles (smile).

Have not seen them in years.

Check out Plastic Soldier Review for plastic soldiers that will fit some of these needs.

Strelets has some good command troops, even Mr. Lincoln.

Their name was originally Thomas Figures. I had a cigar box full of them for sale on TMP months ago. Finally sold them
right before Christmas.

I also have a bunch of the old Bussler 25 mm line which by todays standards is a perfect match for 20 mm plastic.

RSM made the best 20 mm ACW I have ever seen. Don't know if they are still around, but they were mini works of art.

Looking at what is available in Plastic 20mm I would have thought there wasn't any need to go for any metals at all. Of course as I am not an ACW expert I stand to be corrected, but the ranges look pretty comprehensive to me.

Generally speaking, plastic ranges answer for most of my project needs. Plastic Soldier review has been perused a number of times over. However, command stand troops, like musicians, unit standards (colors), and officers are few and far between in the average set of plastics. My plan calls for four stand units of 3-4 figures each with one stand being all command types;officer, bugler/drummer and one or two colors, depending on the unit depicted. In looking over PSR, most of the plastics available have unit standards which are the wrong size, engraved, incorrect in depicting the subject, or in unworkable poses. Sadly, Imex really suffers here for my purposes. The Dayton Painting Consortium,Ltd. stuff is certainly temping price wise and Newline stuff looks great. I'll have to take a look at SHQ and Jacklex.

I'd definetly go for Italeri – and they cover a heck of a lot of stuff – their artillery sets are excellent.

HaT do some useful zouves.

My armies, of course, are mainly Airfix because that's all there was (!) and I'm not doing all that painting again !

all my collection is taken from the italeri sets ,I have recently added some SHQ acw figs which are now sold by sgts mess in the UK .

Mmm, take your point about officers and standards. Must admit I tend to use paper flags in most cases and if I were doing ACW (and who knows one day I may) I think a flag staff given to a musket/rifleman figure with his weapon removed would do for me. (His gun I mean, before any smart allic herps up about removing a soldiers weapon)

RSM 20mm ACW figures are still made by Dayton Painting Consortium. They are wonderful looking figures.

2nd that on RSM.

K&L still available from a company in Oklahoma. They are cool but more like a large 15mm or an 18mm.

Wodensfeld, small line back in production.

Qualiticast, out of production , very nice if you can find them

Musket miniatures. Nice line , been around for ages.

Tumbling Dice has a small line as well.Very nice

Sgt's Mess, very nice as are the Kennington and Newline.

The Imex/Accurate/Revell plastic Civil War are excellent. Italeri and ESCI are OK. The ESCI artillery pices are pretty good.

For flags, carve out the pole and replace with a Flag Dude flag. Simply awesome.

Just dawned on me , DAF! I'm thinking what's a SYW 25mm dude doing commenting on 20mm. ACW? The Dayton Painting guys also have the old RSM 25mm SYW line. Very nice as well.

And they are really nice guys.
