The Lounge is fine. Several of us are fiddling, whilst others are eating cake (& suggesting the non-Lounge denizens should eat some too). Old Gibbons has suggested we're past our 'use by date' but Nemo thinks it'll all work out in the end. |

can anyone explain how this kind of thing happens? Ive never understood why TMP has these bugs so often, and has to close down a couple hours every single day. No other forum I've ever encountered had similar issues. |

can anyone explain how this kind of thing happens? Ive never understood why TMP has these bugs so often, and has to close down a couple hours every single day. No other forum I've ever encountered had similar issues. TMP is not like other forums (fora?). The backend database and code are largely bespoke code written by Bill himself. Not only that, but it's been around for at least 20 years and thus predates most (all?) of the other forums. That's why Bill had to write most of the code himself. Back then he had no choice. |

Maybe Bill should hire someone who has more "experience" in providing maintenance service and to work on the long promised TMP4.0 This would allow Bill more time to work on more relevant Editorial duties such as content and contacts with users and advertisers |

Yes, inappropriate database engine and writing too much code to deal with input data (posts) instead of letting a proper database structure and constraints do all the heavy lifting. How could you possibly tell? Know-it-alls… The above function for post counts is obviously not performed in TMP that way. Post counts here seem to be done by individual row processing code instead of the simple group process the above statement represents and does not need two hours of maintenance to repair. Since you have no familiarity with the database or development language we use, perhaps you should be less arrogant? The code behind this website does some really remarkable things, and in many ways is still ahead of commercial systems which are out there. As for my competence, I'm well experienced in both programming and information systems, and have worked for some of the larger software companies in the world. Maybe Bill should hire someone who has more "experience" in providing maintenance service and to work on the long promised TMP4.0This would allow Bill more time to work on more relevant Editorial duties such as content and contacts with users and advertisers First, not sure there is anyone with "more" experience… I've been doing this for decades. Hard to beat that. Even if you could find such a person, imagine how much they would cost, and the imagine how much TMP would have to raise to pay that person. Do you think this little hobby website could raise such a sum? No, it makes much more sense to do what I have been doing – hiring editors to handle "content and contacts with users and advertisers" so that I can stay working where I am most needed. |

To answer a grammar query from above, the nominative and accusative plural of the LATIN noun "forum" is "fora". However, it is not for genitive, dative or ablative. For the English noun "forum", stick an s (NOT AN APOSTROPHE s) on the end of it. Let's not try to talk like we're butlers. |

I would like to say that the "ochoin" who sent me the PM I referred to above was not the real one,who has subsequently sent me several gracious PM's. I'm guessing the oppenheimer guy, before he got locked. Apologies to the real ochoin if I caused any distress. I only posted the query here because I was not sure where my PM reply would be going. Confusing. Which I suppose was the idea. Or I should say,"idea". |

With all the drive by trolling [see above DELETED] and the "trolls" still on the site that are just rude, etc., TMP members. Bill is a little "jumpy" I'd think, and IMO it is justified … A lot of drama, etc., for a site about "adults?!?" playing with toy soldiers … I've been saying that a lot lately … |
Tommy20 | 16 Mar 2016 8:25 a.m. PST |
I still think a lot of this, maybe not all, but a lot, could be avoided by requiring a valid e-mail address before a new member can post. |

I still think a lot of this, maybe not all, but a lot, could be avoided by requiring a valid e-mail address before a new member can post. We do require that, but it is very easy to get a yahoo.com or gmail.com email address, or a disposable email address from many suppliers. |

Something else, I thought about. I know I put my actual name in my profile. Unlike many others, Which is different than my screen name. And later realized it was used against me by the F/Trolls etc. … Like looking me up on Linked In, etc. … Thought is would be safe to do that again on a site that was basically populated by "Adults". That just happened to like playing with Toy Soldiers. What could be more harmless ?! Well as we see and it's all across the net. Trolls, losers, etc., find this a good outlet for their "odd", "immature", etc., behavior, etc. … And as I said on another thread about people should be using "good" internet manners, etc. … TMP link And it almost turned into and argument over that !?!? So all that being said, I know as a semi-retired PI. Using a false name in any "crime ?" is a given. But I'd think if someone does not at least use their real name. Or at least a more reasonable "nom de plum" ? So to speak they would be suspect. We have to review paper trails, etc., all the time. And see many fake names that it does not take long to figure out. A fake name is a cover, for someone who is trying to hide something, etc., yes ? Like on a site about playing with toys, maybe they don't want to be ID'd, etc. ? I know it won't be a 100% effective. But possibly making members use their real name or a reasonable facsimile, might cut down on the Trolls ? I mean think about it … if someone's profile say his name is John Smith. That might be red flag ? Just say'n I have nothing to hide and I am up front generally about everything I post. Some, as I found out dislike my "openness", etc. … No real mystery … on a site about playing with toys, yes ? |
