Did each battalion carry both a white and a yellow flag. If so, how were they carried from left to right facing the unit? i.e. which one was on the left and which one on the right?

The first or premier battalion carried the white flag, all the others carried a yellow flag.

What time are you aiming at?
In the 1790s there were (still) two flags – for the 1st Baon one white, one yellow. The white Leibfahne was on the right. For the later times one flag per Baon. In 1805 the white one for the Grenadier Baon, later as wrgmr1 wrote.

My Austrian figs are wearing crested helmets so early war years. I guess pre-1808 since weren't they all pretty much in shakos by then? Only one flag would be great becasue it would be easier to distinguish between units with the same facing color in a sea of white. I didn't think the Grenadiers carried flags since they were a combined units???

Not quite.

Shakoes for all by 1812-14

Helmets were still used by German regiments in 1809. Hungarians get the shakoes first in '09.

It is always recommend to take advantage of the searches in the discussion groups.
Initial find that was a good discussion on this topic:

1805 campaign and earlier it is not incorrect to have two flags like the prussian scheme.

My 1809 army has German/wallow/galacian in helmets and hungarian in shakos.
All have one flag with senior battalion with the white one Liebfahne and the remainder with the yellow ordinafahn:

I did research and from that…had most units still with the 1792 issue flag, 2 units ( very low regt senior number) with the rare 1804 issue and remainder with the new 1806 issue between the 3rd, 4th and 5 th corps that I am building.

Good luck
