I was about to order some flags from GMB but then it doesn't show a picture and Wow Hold on there some questions are then thrown at me

My unit is Stain's Regiment ( purple facings ) number 50? ( not got my books with me)

However GMB when I order are requesting specific unit details .

Is this because they are customised for each unit ie have unit number on etc ?

So I don't mess this up can somebody kindly confirm my understanding here when it comes to ordering.

My Stains Infantry line regiment will eventually consist of 3 Batallions.

Should my first Battalion contain the Liedfahne or sometimes referred to as the Colonel's Flag? The other 2 battalions will have the normal yellow coloured flag. I presume these latter 2 will be identical?

When I get around to do my 2nd Regiment which is in the same brigade is the above flags system repeated for this new unit ?

Many thanks in anticipation of someone putting me on the right track .

I didn't have this problem with Brits it was much more simpler ! :)

'Some' flags displayed in the Army museum in Vienna do have little panels attached to them with numbers on them. Some illustrations show them without.
I have no idea if the panels were added later or what. To me it would seem logical that a rgeiment would find some way of claiming its flag for itself. Not much help.
Leibfahne and Ordinairefahne carried by 1st battalion other battalions a single O/fahne. And yes subsequent regiments the same.
If this complicates matters get your flags from somewhere else?

Depends on date – before 1808 then 2 standards per battalion, afterwards 1 standard. This is the same for all line regiments.

So pre 1808 (ignoring 1805)
1st battalion has a liebfahne (white) and an ordinarfahne (yellow); 2nd and 3rd battalions a pair of ordinarfahne.

Post 1808
1st battalion has a liebfahne; 2nd and 3rd battalions an ordinarfahne.

The imperial motif changes after 1806 with the abolishment of the HRE but standards were slow to catch up with that. I know of no unit specific distinctions. That there were numerous identical ordinarfahne is indicated by the practice of combined grenadier battalions being issued with "spares" from depots.

Many thanks guys

As I am doing an 1809 force then I will follow the guidelines for post 1808 .

I will inform GMB of the unit I am trying to replicate and see what turns up

I do not think this was covered here in depth but to add to Zippe's, after or during the "1806 issuance of flags" most all had the regimental number in the upper two corners.
Units with the older flags ( who did not loose them during the 1805 disaster) thus added similar identification to their flags.
With my 15mm I do not worry about this, since it can't be seen to well anyway.

Ha Ha thanks Marshal . That's probably the reason GMB ask for the unit number .

It all fits .

Many thanks again you've all been terrific and very patient with a Naps numpty like me :)
