"On January 17, 1781, at the Battle of the Cowpens, British Colonel Banastre Tarleton was decisively defeated by Continental General Daniel Morgan. Tarleton's British regiments gained ground until they were confronted with an unexpected counterattack and disintegrated. Now the American troops were pushing across the battlefield, capturing surrendering British soldiers and fighting artillerymen who were defending their cannon. I knew Washington and Tarleton had a short engagement during this battle. But did not know the details of how it went. Most of the games of AWI we are playing is at regimental level.

Here's a Cowpens game I ran a few weeks ago, using The Sword and the Flame.

No great drama in the cavalry encounters, as I recall.
As I see it, the main problem with running named battles that everyone is familiar with is that the players are aware of the booboos that were committed and avoid them.
Having said that, militia units ran away with alacrity and came back proudly.

A Devil of a Whipping is a great history of the battle, which is near my home town, so I have walked the area many times. Most games I have played wouldn't allow Washington's cavalry three charges in fifteen minutes.

I believe it was during this fight that Tarleton lost several fingers from his right hand.
