I noticed that Monolith's Cliffhanger range and Eureka have their version. Does anyone else out there make these figures? Are there rules to go with the theme? What are the scenarios like? Apes armed with guns tracking and hunting caveman-like humans? |
arturo rex | 28 Mar 2005 9:46 a.m. PST |
I have not bought either of them (Monoliths's Cliffhanger apes and Eureka's Apes with Guns). But now I am interested. However, I would think that, if the scenarios consist of "apes armed with guns tracking and hunting caveman-like humans", the same people who constantly object to using a handful of Europeans with gun powder weapons against masses of natives armed with bows and clubs will have a field day with that one. Just kidding. I think scenarios of that sort would be interesting and entertaining, regardless of which side I played. They certainly happen and happened, though not on a planet really ruled by apes . . . that we are aware of. |

I wonder why this thread did not show up on the main TMP page? |

BTW, Eureka's Apes with Guns are no longer available. Ian |

I'm doing it with the Monolith/Graven Image models. I got the Icarus (Astronaut's Ship) from here - very nice it is too! cshobbies.com |

I've always thought the world presented by "Apes" (the original, of course) and "Beneath" was pretty cool and well thought out. Didn't much care for "Excape", "Conquest", "Battle", or the TV show (live action or cartoon). The Ape City architecture would be especially cool on the tabletop. I think you could do a lot with an Ape faction, a Human faction armed with stolen Ape weapons, and a small but well armed Mutant faction (maybe represent the mental powers with various illusion spells). You could even go the Kamandi route (an old DC comic) and add in Dog factions, Insect factions, and so on (although that deviates from the background presented by the movies). |

Alright!! ! I thought those Ape figures "disappeared" from the site around the same time that Eureka's ones did, because of the "scare tactics" of some ephemeral group. Nice to see they are back! They are terrific figures. Now, if only Eureka would bring theirs back, too!! |

I have a fully painted Ape Army from Eureka. I am a HUGE APES fan. I scratchbuilt a slave wagon, artillery limber and cannon to go with the infantry and Cavalry. I also painted a Cavalry banner duplicating the one from Beneath when the Apes march to war. I have around 50-60 foot and 40-50 Cavalry. I tend to use mine in Lost World Gaslight games. I will also use them in a Stargate style game. thanks, John |

John, You are my idol. I have always done ancients and medieval, with some renaissance/ECW, lately with WAB. However, I have always to do a Sci-fi army. I think you have convinced me. Your ape army must be impressive. Any pictures? |
John Leahy | 28 Mar 2005 10:42 p.m. PST |
Yep. I have some of them in a Gaslight game. The Slave wagon with part of the army on a hunting expedition. I'll see where they are posted and provide a link. Thanks, John |

I'd love to see those, too, John! Sounds neat. |

Don't tease us John, please post a link to your anxious followers! So you already have your Stargate? |

Oops. Sorry. I posted the link on the Post Nuke armies thread. But here it is: link There is a foot and mounted Ape General in the pic. The Slave wagon is at the bottom of the pic. You can sort of see the Cavalry banner near the top. link Thanks, John |

Don't know why I posted the link twice. |

@ John Leahy : Thanks for the link. They look great! Very inspiring. Where did the Ape cavalry come from? I don't see them on the Monolith site. Were they part of the Eureka range, too? Damn, I really wish I had bought some Eureka Apes before it all "hit the fan"... |
bubbahotep | 29 Mar 2005 3:48 p.m. PST |
Napoleon III - According to the Yahoo group the Monolith Horses have been done for the Apes, and Cavalry will be released in April |

Hi. Thanks. Mine are Eureka. I still have around 20 Cav to finish. I'll check out the other figs. Are the Monolith the same scale as the Eureka? Anyone know? Thanks, John |
Area23 | 30 Mar 2005 2:13 a.m. PST |
Monolith are big 30mm. I understand, while the Eurekas are more close to 25mm? Not very compatible. |
Cosmotiger | 30 Mar 2005 9:29 a.m. PST |
"Ape must not kill ape." :) Now I wish I'd bought some of the Eureka Apes, too. Oh well, as if I have any time to paint them... |
Napoleon III | 30 Mar 2005 10:33 a.m. PST |
@ bubbahotep : Thanks for the tip about the Monolith cavalry. That will be great, especially with the Eureka ones being MIA now. What Yahoo group are you referring to? (as if I don't belong to enough already! hehe) BTW that Icarus spaceship from CSHobbies looks great!! What rules do you use? |
Napoleon III | 30 Mar 2005 10:35 a.m. PST |
@ John Leahy : I'm not at all familiar with "Gaslight". How does it incorporate "The Planet of the Apes"-type forces? Or is it more of a generic game "engine" which allows one to use whatever force you want as long as you work out the equivalent/relative stats? I'm very curious about how to take these from the "very-cool-looking-figures" stage (which yours definitely are!!), to the "playing-an-actual-game" stage. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. |
John Leahy | 30 Mar 2005 12:37 p.m. PST |
Hi. Gaslight has a system where you can create the stats for your troops and even give them special abilities if you want. My Gorillas are fair in shooting, but lethal in Close combat. I haven't added any special abilities. However, I am considering allowing them to have a saving throw due to being able to absorb more damage. Thanks, John |

Hi John - Rules? Not yet! I'm still busy preparing the models, and wondering whether to build Ape buildings myself or cattle-prod Monolith into making the ones they were muttering about designing a few months ago! All it usually takes is a couple of requests on the group! The group I mentioned is the Gotterdammerung/Cliff-Hanger/Disturbia Yahoo Group: link |
