Massive spaceship sets off to colonise Mars. On the way, the environmental systems fail and everyone dies. The ship continues on its way, breaches Mars' orbit and crashes on the surface, spilling toxic waste all over the surface causing a massive weather shift that destroys the planet due to a catastrophic storm that ignites the atmosphere.

Fossils, we need to find fossils and remains of structures. The Mars Rover can't do that, only human Archaeologists can.

As for gaming scenario:

The one critical ingredient, other than water, a free and independent Mars needs is phosphorous. Bio-Genetics R' Us has nearly perfected a new species of rocking-munching algae that convert locally available elements into phosphorous in a Martian-based lab. An Earth Gov black ops team tipped off by government agents is on it's way to shut down this research operation while the local BG-R-US security forces(many former military operators from Anti-Earth Gov states) tipped off by corporate agents scramble to evacuate the research. Unbeknownst to both sides, a Free Mars commando team is advancing under the cover of a dust storm to seize the research for themselves.

And the other experiments at this facility were safely euthanized hours ago, right C Team? C Team? C Team…?

General Stubblebine says there are machines on both the surface and underground.

"There are structures on the surface of Mars. I will tell you for the record that there are structures underneath the surface of Mars that cannot be seen by the Voyager cameras that went by in 1976. I will also tell you that there are machines on the surface of Mars and there are machines under the surface of Mars that you can look at, you can find out in detail, you can see what they are, where they are, who they are and a lot of detail about them."

If they'd made the Mars Rover look like a fire hydrant, they'd have discovered the presence of Martian dogs a lot sooner… ;-)
