I went to the Triples on Sunday, I know it is a big place, but it seems to me that there were less punters there than last year or the year before that.

Is it an illusion or is it me just getting old as I have been going to them for over 30 years,

What do other wargamers think ?
and how well did the traders do ?

Reactionary18 May 2015 5:45 a.m. PST

Quite!

Some might think I'm glad, but I'm not, not really. Do I think it was quiet because of me, certainly not, but

To the hundred or so people that emailed to say that they would not attend after my treatment last year (and those that didn't email but didn't attend), thank you for your support.

Next year, please forget any support for me and go.

I would like this show to exist even if I can no longer go myself (I'm banned). You will not miss it until it is not there, then you'll bore everyone to death with the story of its demise. And, I hate being bored by boring stories!

And, although not at Triples I'll be doing shows elsewhere this year, you can see my game there

Regards,

James

@ olicana: Why were you banned James?

olicana18 May 2015 11:56 a.m. PST

A sad and boring story, not worth repeating here……

freewargamesrules18 May 2015 2:14 p.m. PST

One trader said their takings were down 70%!

fred218418 May 2015 3:46 p.m. PST

I for one noticed that neither the hosts or any participatants even advertised it on places as such as TMP on the run up week.

Salute gets non stop talked about..newark gets mentioned.but dear old triples.. Not a sniff..

So if they arent bothered… Surely one man being banned didnt cause it.

The show was so uninspiring this time around. I go to shows to buy stuff I didnt even think of buying.. But not this time.. Plenty of dice tho.

And a fair number of the wargames related Yahoo Groups I belong to had messages mentioning the show….

olicana19 May 2015 4:39 a.m. PST

I've just looked at those TMP links. All, but a very few, are traders. Advertisement and 'buzz' are two very different things. Buzz requires 'punter' input. Relying on the 'industry' to sell a show (and several shows do) will always miss the buzz (and that's not necessarily a Birmingham reference, see 'Birmingham bus').

fred218419 May 2015 5:38 a.m. PST

So there was one 'official' advert. And it only got posted in one forum.

And people who mention it in passing whilst talking about the colour of there socks doesnt count.. I for one dont sit here reading every subject in the boards. Only ones that interest me.. Which these days are few and far between.

But

Enough said!

Apart from a couple of years when I was living/working overseas, I haven't missed the annual trip to Triples for 25 years (until the last couple of years that has meant Friday to Sunday); this year I was there on Sunday and was very disappointed, and will probably give it a miss in future.

Volleyfire20 May 2015 11:11 a.m. PST

I'm with fred on this one, I thought there was a lack of notices about the show. I ended up Googling it to find out what I needed to know. I also found it a bit uninspiring too unfortunately..

Craig Ambler27 May 2015 2:22 a.m. PST

I missed it for the first time for a while this year. I just couldn't be bothered going as I didn't need anything and the York show does it all for me now.

Shame really

Craig

I don't think them moving next year's show to March is going to solve anything with it following Vapnartak in February which is in the same area of the country, and which will attract the same punters you would think.

Aubrey29 May 2015 1:39 a.m. PST

I think Craig Ambler and Volley Fire sum things up for me. I used to go to Vapnartak, Triples and occasionally Salute and Derby. Used to love the quirkiness of the Octagon venue but I've only been to the new one once. I found it really souless to be honest. Hope things improve next year.

Mac163829 May 2015 4:04 a.m. PST

I have had a chat with my friends and other members at the club,
and they all think £3.50 GBP to park, £6.00 GBP to get in,best part 200 miles round trip, a 2 hour drive there and 2 hour drive back.
Not cost effective.

York and Darby are about the same time and distance and you are not charged to park.
I have to say we enjoyed them more as shows.

Volleyfire30 May 2015 2:40 a.m. PST

I note that Hammerhead next year is down for Saturday March 5th, just prior to Triples I assume if it moves to mid March? That makes it more unlikely I'll bother going if I manage to get to York and Hammerhead I'm afraid. Shows are too close together timewise in the same region of the country. Now Baccus have an excellent idea thejoyof6.co.uk however it's only 6mm which doesn't really float my boat unforunately. It's a pity Triples doesn't take the same formula and head towards the middle of the school Summer hols IMO when we have a long gap from May to September in this part of the country without many shows to attend. It's a pity they decided to squeeze it into March instead,so near to Hammerhead, and especially as that can still be a time of year for snow these days, York sometimes being difficult to get to for that very reason.

The Goon from the Moon30 May 2015 6:02 a.m. PST

Middle of school hols?
You mean that time of year when a lot of people go on holiday?

Baccus 6mm30 May 2015 9:08 a.m. PST

Volley fire,

Surely if Triples moves to the middle of June as you suggest then it would clash with JOS? To be honest I don't think moving dates will do anything to alleviate the shows malaise. It needs a root and branch rethink, not a cosmetic date change.

As for not being g interested in what the JOS has to offer, I'd politely challenge you and others who agree with you to have a look. Entry will be a mere £2.00 GBP, we will have as many games on show as there were at Triples and without all those big figures dominating things it may make you think again about what 6mm has to offer. By just staying away because you think it will be of no interest is missing the op on to either prove or disprove your view of the smaller side of things.

Volleyfire30 May 2015 9:55 a.m. PST

Thanks Baccus but I've tried 6mm, a friend of mine has Franco Prussian and Ancients, and whilst I've nothing against the scale I just haven't the eye sight or space to branch out into another scale unfortunately.
As for it being school hols, I don't think everyone decides to go away on holiday on exactly the same week, or for the whole six weeks Goon from the Moon, and a lot of gamers kids have grown up anyway, it's a 'greying' hobby apparently according to the polls and surveys, so I think there'd still be enough families around to support a show, most might find it a welcome break from having to think of things for the kids to do.
I'll probaly bump into you tomorrow at Partizan Baccus if you are there and introduce myself and we can continue this discussion in the flesh so to speak!

The Goon from the Moon31 May 2015 9:48 a.m. PST

People without kids also go on holiday in the summer.

6mm really doesn't float my boat but I have nothing against it apart from personal appeal. Seems a little limiting to just have a show for one scale. Perhaps 'those big figures' are seen a lot at shows because they're popular and have more visual appeal? Pete will, of course disagree with that.

Craig Ambler01 Jun 2015 3:33 a.m. PST

I too liked the Octagon site despite its layout, which made it at least interesting. It also allowed one to wander to quieter areas. The new location is just another big space.

Baccus 6mm01 Jun 2015 5:37 a.m. PST

@ Goon from the Moon.

It's not at all 'limiting' to hold the JOS. It's actually very, very liberating. The idea is not to ghetto-ise 6mm gamers or games. It's actually to celebrate and showcase what is going on with the scale and just what can be achieved with 6mm figures and games.

You may ask why we've done this, and the answer lies partially in your own post. 28mm games dominate the show scene, which proportionately reflects the number of companies producing the figures and the user base. Where 6mm games are put on show they are effectively shouted down amidst the noise created by the bigger figures. I have seen some magnificent 6mm games at shows which have been completely ignored by reporters and bloggers in favour of yet another terrain-dominated traffic jam in 28mm presented as a static display.

The JOS is a wonderful opportunity for wargamers, no matter what their interests or scale preference, to see for themselves why there is strong, growing and persistent 6mm presence in the hobby. You'll see games that will take your breath away and actually show you what you are blocking out by not allowing 6mm to go around floating your boat.

The JOS is not for a self-selecting inward looking sect. It's actually highlighting a much-misundertood section of our collective hobby for ALL to enjoy and take part in. The challenge is for people to overcome a little bit of prejudice and come along to see what the fuss is all about.

Volleyfire01 Jun 2015 5:47 a.m. PST

The enthusiasm of Baccus is infectious, in fact after meeting and having a very interesting conversation with you at Partizan yesterday my hand is wandering towards my wallet!

Aubrey01 Jun 2015 6:50 a.m. PST

I have to say that one of the most eye catching games I've ever seen at a show (and it was actually Triples a few years back if memory serves me right) was a 6 mm one. It was a recreation of one wing of the ECW Battle of Edgehill (again if memory serves me right). It was jaw-dropping because the club had done it at something like 1:2 or even 1:1. The pike blocks looked awesome and the whole thing gave a sense of how much ground troops took up.
