I suppose this is more if a sci-fantasy thing anyway, big superheavy vehicles and what not. It offers a nice centerpiece to paint and play with.

Apart from it looking cool – having the "engine room" in one of the units with power feeds to the various tread units works. Also you can replace sections that are badly damaged or change units for mission specialisation.

That and also allows for backup of major subsystems – you don't want the computer tank's brain all in one place, otherwise you take that single element out and the whole system goes "phut!".
