Just finished a couple of more Command stands.
One Corps command and three divisional commands.

Also 15 batteries of artillery.
6 batteries of 6 lbr's
4 batteries of 12 lbr's
and last were 5 batteries of horse guns.

Hope you like them?

Beautiful work! Love the command stands.

paulalba16 Mar 2015 1:40 p.m. PST

Excellent, what a great line to read: calpe prussians picture heavy!!!

Gonsalvo16 Mar 2015 3:20 p.m. PST

Nice work on great figures!@

Markconz16 Mar 2015 8:50 p.m. PST

Wonderful sir! That's also an awful lot of guns, makes me feel much better about ordering a whole bunch more myself! :)

Navy Fower Wun Seven16 Mar 2015 11:05 p.m. PST

Quite lovely!

(A little shiny for my tastes, but amazing brushwork which do credit to the amazing sculpting from Peter F)

von Winterfeldt17 Mar 2015 10:50 a.m. PST

very nice brushwork

wrgmr117 Mar 2015 1:19 p.m. PST

Thanks for all your kind comments gents. I've been painting Prussians since last July.

Markconz, yes that is a lot of guns. Our plan is to do Ligny and Waterloo at Enfilade at the end of May. We needed a lot of guns.
I will probably sell some when these games are over.

Navy417, I agree they are a tad shiney. I spray with an acrylic gloss then Testors Dullcoat, but they did not dull that much. I'll have to give them another spray. Calpe are great figures to paint, the sculpting detail is amazing.

This forum is filled with the perils of spray varnish. If you live north of Naples, in winter anyway, you are taking a risk.

My experience is that photography is so unforgiving.

The slightest sheen looks gloss, under the light which is needed for any aperture that allows depth of focus!

Not to mention the slightest imperfection (which the eye does not see) that is ghastly in a photo.

I've just done a Louis XVIII conversion and sent a pic to Niels R, but, when I looked at it again, I seriously did groan out loud. What looks great in 28mm, is truly terrible magnified under that lens! He looks nothing like Orson Welles…….Look at the shine on the Black Musketeer's elbow….it is totally matt!….but not here.

What I would say is that your Corps command is terrific. The trumpeter I would love to see even closer up, he is superb. The simple grey coat in Infantry command is far better than my attempt at this. The simplest colours can be the most challenging!

I will then criticise, as per my pet obsession. Your HA are all correct in having the rammer/spongeman on the correct side of the gun and the loader opposite. The foot artillery all seem to be left handed! (not allowed!)

Aw forget it. Great work and I'll bet not as shiny on your shelves!

wrgmr117 Mar 2015 5:42 p.m. PST

Deadhead,
You are correct regarding the camera picking up the shiny factor, even the artillery which I see as very dull have a sheen to them in the pictures. The command stands are shiny but not as much in reality.

My camera is an Canon PowerShot SX200, which is 6 years or so old. Taking good pictures is just as much an art as painting is.

Regarding rammers/spongmen, honestly I didn't even think about checking which side they were supposed to be on. I also painted all the foot guns, then a few months later all the HA. Anyway, not changing them, but thanks for pointing it out I will check in the future.

Painting grey is tricky.
I've experimented with lots of grey paint until I found the right combinations.

I will try to take a close up of the Hussar for you, depending on my camara…..

Deadhead, here you are:

Not really my best work, but I was trying for little better quality for the command stands.

They are lovely, great detailing on the trumpeter and the officers chest decorations.

PentexRX818 Mar 2015 10:16 a.m. PST

I truly enjoy looking at all of your work. Your brush skills are top notch. I just bought a bunch of Calpe minis myself (not 600, but a lot for my standards).

With that many superbly painted units, feel free to join in my games anytime you want!

Personal logo deadhead Supporting Member of TMP18 Mar 2015 10:21 a.m. PST

Well if that trumpeter is not your best quality….wow.

The cords around the trumpet, I never achieve what you have managed. The cord across his chest in two colours…"easy". The rolled cords always end up a messy splodge of colours in my hands

wrgmr118 Mar 2015 3:07 p.m. PST

Paxx88: A compliment from such an accomplished painter as yourself is gratefully accepted.

PentaxRX8: Thank you, most of these Calpe figures I got from a friend for 35% discount, he had bought way too many. I live in White Rock, British Columbia, not sure where you are but I'd game with you. Our battalions are 12 figures and cavalry regiments 6.

Deadhead: I use the Dalimore method, usually base color with one highlight as with these. I only did three color on their faces and the one grey officer on foot. If I really take my time with three color, they look better. Using a 000 Windsor and Newton sable brush with 3.0 reading glasses improved my painting, measurably.

If you're ever in Pittsburgh, PA let me know.

Do you have a painting blog or anything?

KaweWeissiZadeh20 Mar 2015 1:20 p.m. PST

Excellent painting on some excellent miniatures. Thanks for sharing!

wrgmr120 Mar 2015 10:59 p.m. PST

PentexRX8: No sorry no painting blog. Maybe I should?

Our group has some excellent painters in it, which drives me to paint better myself. I found looking at others figures and reading some painting books, really helped as well.
I will let you know if I ever come to Pittsburg, same if you ever get to Vancouver, Canada.

Thanks KaweWeissiZadeh! They are excellent figures!
Cheers!

Great work, Your artillery batteries are very impressive.

AuvergneWargamer17 Apr 2015 7:35 a.m. PST

A belated Bonjour,

Dunno how I missed this as I love Calpe artillery!

Are you going to do matching limbers as well?

Cheers,

Paul

hallmarkfps17 Apr 2015 12:54 p.m. PST

great stuff. love the command stands!

wrgmr119 Apr 2015 1:20 p.m. PST

Hi Paul,

Nice to hear from you. No, Limbers aren't necessary for our rule set Shako 2. Also, no one else in our group has them. So I thought why bother, it;s also another expense. They would look nice though.

I've finished all my commitment for Ligny and Waterloo. Virtually all of Von Bulow's Corps, including 23 battalions of Landwehr.
I still have 200+ figures to paint, just extras.
We are doing both of these battles at the Enfilade Convention in Olympia Washington at the end of May.

Most of my figures in this Battle of Plancenoit at our local con.

Thanks hallmarkfps.
